After fairing pretty well in the first half week of the season, Claude Julien’s men will have their hands full with 4 games in 6 days. On Monday night, they’ll take on the Oilers who will no doubt be looking to rebound after yesterday 5-1 loss (much like the Rangers did against the Islanders, winning 5-0 last night after being completely dominated in a 4-0 loss on Thursday) and then, they’ll get to battle the Canucks for 3 games. I fully expect to see Jake Allen in net for one of the back to back games scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday. Fresh off the best season of his career in St-Louis serving as back-up to Jordan Binnington, Allen will be hoping to replicate his performances thus allowing Price to have a lesser workload this season.
While Wednesday’s game was the Drouin-Suzuki-Anderson line coming out party, Saturday, it was the good old line of Tatar-Danault-Gallagher that was the most important in the win over the Oilers. This coming week, fans will be hoping to see a better offensive contribution from the Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Armia line. While this line has been kept off the scoreboard so far, they have showed promise and I believe it’s only a question of time before they reap what they sow. Even without gathering any points, they’ve contributed to the Canadiens’ good start to the season, last night, in Edmonton, they managed to pin down the Oilers in their own zone on a few occasions and sooner or later, these will pay off. The way Toffoli is able to slip behind the defence undetected at times will also surely result in goals in the near future.
It will also be interesting to see how Julien uses Romanov in the coming week, while he played him a lot in the game against Toronto, he spent less than 16 minutes on the ice against the Oilers last night. Clearly, Claude Julien is sticking to the plan of easing the young Russian is and against opponents like McDavid and Draisaitl, it’s not a bad thing to shield the rookie a bit somehow.
This morning at practice, the lines and pairings remain unchanged and the Canadiens have announced that Romanov has been assigned to the taxi squad. Once again, this is a purely mathematical exercise and it doesn’t mean that he won’t play the next game.
For the goalie fans amongst you, Carey Price revealed in an interview with TVA Sports last night that he’ll be sporting new equipment when the Canadiens wear their new retro reverse threads and a new mask as well. Hopefully, it will look better than his other retro attempt, the infamous Jacques Plante tribute mask.
Finally, if you were a regular at the Bell Centre in the last couple of seasons, you know all about FANatics Saturday. While it’s impossible for the team to welcome fan in it’s building for now, the organization has decided to keep the FANatics tradition alive online. Last night, they kicked it off with an online trivia contest, a Q and A with Marc Dumont and an Instagram warm-up with DJ Fafa Khan. They’ll be sticking to that formula for every Saturday game and also for the first home game of the season on Thursday January 28th.
Après s’être plutôt bien tire d’affaire dans la première demi-semaine de la saison, les hommes de Claude Julien en auront plein les bras cette semaine avec 4 matchs en 6 jours. Lundi soir, ils affronteront de nouveau les Oilers qui voudront sans aucun doute venger leur défaite de 5-1 d’hier (un peu à l’image des Rangers qui ont vaincu les Islanders 5-0 après que ceux-ci les aient blanchis 4-0 jeudi) et ensuite, ils croiseront le fer avec les Canucks 3 fois. Je m’attends à voir Jake Allen dispute l’un des deux matchs en deux jours de mercredi et jeudi. Après avoir connu la meilleure saison de sa carrière l’an dernier en tant que numéro 2 derrière Jordan Binnongton, Allen espérera pouvoir reproduire ses performances afin de permettre à Carey Price d’avoir un calendrier moins chargé cette année.
Alors que le match de mercredi fut marqué par la découverte du trio Drouin-Suzuki-Anderson, le match de samedi a été dominé par le bon vieux trio Tatar-Danault-Gallagher. Pendant la semaine à venir, les fans espéreront voir la ligne Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Armia produire offensivement. Bien qu’ils ne se soient pas inscris au pointage, les 3 joueurs ont montré de belles choses, c’est une combinaison prometteuse et je suis persuadée qu’ils récolteront bientôt ce qu’ils ont semé. Même sans récolter de point, ils ont participé au bon début de saison du CH, hier soir, à Edmonton, ils ont réussi à embouteiller les Oilers dans leur territoire à quelques reprises et plus tôt que tard, cela finira par rapporter. La façon dont Toffoli est capable de se faufiler derrière la défense et de s’échapper devrait aussi finir par rapporter.
Il sera également intéressant de voir comment Claude Julien utilisera Romanov dans la semaine à venir. Après avoir vu beaucoup de temps de glace à Toronto, il a passé moins de 16 minutes sur la glace hier contre les Oilers. Clairement, le pilote a l’intention de s’en tenir à son plan d’initier le jeune russe aux rigueurs de la LNH progressivement et devant des joueurs contre McDavid et Draisaitl, ce n’est pas une mauvaise chose de protéger un peu la nouvelle recrue.
Ce matin à l’entraînement, les trios et les paires défensives n’avaient pas changes et le CH a annoncé que Romanova avait été assigné à l’escouade volante. Encore une fois, il ne s’agit là que d’une simple opération mathématique et ça ne signifie pas qu’il ratera le prochain match.
Pour les fans de gardiens parmi vous, Carey Price a révélé dans une entrevue avec TVA Sports qu’il portera un nouvel équipement pour les matchs pendant lesquels le CH revêtira son nouveau chandail retro reverse ainsi qu’un nouveau masque. Espérons qu’il sera mieux que son autre masque retro, l’affreux hommage à Jacques Plante.
Enfin, si vous étiez un régulier du Centre Bell pendant les deux dernières saisons, vous serai familier avec le concept des samedis FANatics. Bien qu’il soit impossible pour le Tricolore d’accueillir des fans dans son immeubles présentement, l’organisation a tout de même décidé de poursuivre la tradition en ligne. Hier soir, ils ont lancé les festivités de match avec un jeu questionnaire, une séance de questions-réponses avec Marc Dumont et un réchauffement sur Instagram avec Fafa Khan. Ils prévoient faire de même pour tous les matchs du samedi ainsi que pour le premier match à domicile du jeudi 28 janvier.
