Things are going well in the big league this season, the new look Habs got 6 points out of a possible 8 this week and they are now 3rd overall in the league as we approach the quarter mark of the season. Meanwhile in the NCAA Cole Caufield is having himself quite a year.
He is currently on a 12-game point streak and in 20 games played, he’s got 33 points (17 goals and 16 assists). During his 12-game point streak, he gathered 25 points and he’s on a 7 multi points game streak as well.
His contribution has been huge for his Wisconsin Badgers who currently lead the Big 10 standings one points ahead of the Minnesota Golden Gophers who they beat twice this weekend but scores of 4-1 and 8-1.
When the Badgers’ season is over, we already know that Caufield will be signed to a contract and carry on developing in the Habs organisation. Marc Bergevin has said so himself in a Q & A session with season ticket holders. He stopped short of saying where Caufield would land though, in Laval, on the taxi squad or straight in the Canadiens line-up.
To be honest, I hope they take their time with this kid, there’s no point in rushing him right now. The Canadiens have got plenty of depth on the right wing and the step-up is big between NCAA hockey and professional leagues. I believe a bit of seasoning under Joel Bouchard’s tutelage could only benefit him. Next season, if Joel Armia is not back or if Byron leaves trhough the expansion draft, there will be room on the right wing for Caufield, if he is deemed ready.
For now though, Caufield must enjoy the end of his NCAA career and if he keeps playing the way that he has, he’ll be on of the front runners for the Hobey Baker award which is given to the best player every year.
