For the first time since suffering a concussion thanks to Tyler Myers on January 21st, Joel Armia was a full participant at practice as he was cleared for contact yesterday afternoon. He found himself on the Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Perry line since the later has been covering for him after his injury. Post practice, Julien was asked who would make way for Armia in the line-up if he was ready to return. The coach started by stating that today was the first time the Finn practiced with contact and that they would need to see how he felt after that. Once he is fully ready though, Julien said that a tough decision awaited him.
Prior to his injury, Armia had registered 5 points, but 4 of those came on the night he was injured so he wasn’t necessarily having that strong of a season start. Meanwhile, in the 7 games he’s played so far, Perry has 3 points and Julien has said on numerous occasions that he likes his play in front of the net on the power play. At even strength though, it seems like Perry’s legs are not up to the task from time to time and it’s understandable since he is after all the oldest player on the team. Will Julien be willing to pull Perry from the line-up? Another possible candidate to scratch could be Paul Byron, he hasn’t exactly been great most of the time since the beginning of the season. However, if you take Byron out and move Perry to the 4th line, that line has just lost a lot of speed. Furthermore, it’s possible that sooner rather than later, Julien will want to give Frolik a chance to get his feet wet so to speak and it’s worth remembering that he is a penalty kill specialist, that can always come in handy.
Finally, Carey Price was one of the players who spoke to the media after practice and when he was asked about his play so far this year he stated that he though he played really well, but that of course, he’s never really satisfied. There are a few ways to take this comment, one can panic and think: “if he thinks this is playing well, what does he think playing badly is?” or one can remember that this is Carey Price, the goalie who once told reporters to “Chill out”. The Habs’ goaltender is no fool, he’s well aware of his lacklustre stats right now, but he’s not one to make a big deal of it and start over analyzing his play. Price is calm and confident in nature and it shows even in the way he handles the media.
After 3 long days off, the Habs will finally be back in action tomorrow night when they host the Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre for the first time this season. The game is set to start at 7:30 PM and you can expect to see Carey Price in net even though Julien hasn’t confirmed it yet.

Il s’est retrouvé sur le 3e trio avec Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Perry puisque ce dernier l’a remplacé depuis sa blessure. Après la pratique, Julien s’est fait demander qui céderait sa place dans l’alignement afin d’accommoder Armia à son retour. Le coach a commencé par dire que c’était la première fois aujourd’hui qu’Armia pratiquait avec intensité et contact et qu’il fallait d’abord voir comment il se sentirait après. Julien s’est contenté de dire qu’une décision difficile l’attendait quand il serait fin prêt.
Avant sa blessure, Armia avait récolté 5 points, mais 4 de ceux-ci sont venus dans son dernier match, on ne peut donc pas dire qu’il était en feu en ce début de saison. Depuis, en 7 matchs, Corey Perry a 3 points et Julien a répété à de nombreuses reprises qu’il aime son jeu devant le filet en avantage numérique. À forces égales par contre, par moment, on voit que les jambes de Perry ne suivent plus vraiment et c’est compréhensible puisqu’il est le doyen de l’équipe. Est-ce que Julien sera prêt à retirer Perry de l’alignement? Paul Byron pourrait être un autre candidat pour sauter son tour, on ne peut pas dire qu’il a été particulièrement étincelant depuis le début du calendrier régulier. Toutefois, si Byron est retiré de l’alignement et que Perry prend sa place sur la 4e ligne, ce trio vient de perdre beaucoup de vitesse. De plus, il est possible de croire que plus tôt que tard, Julien voudra donner une chance à Michael Frolik de percer l’alignement et comme il est un spécialiste du désavantage numérique, il pourrait probablement mieux chausser les patins de Byron.
Finalement, Carey Price est l’un des joueurs qui s’est adressé aux médias après la pratique et quand on lui a demandé d’évaluer son jeu depuis le début de la saison, il a dit qu’il considérait qu’il jouait très bien, mais n’était jamais pleinement satisfait. Il y a quelques façons d’interpréter ses paroles, c’est possible de paniquer et de penser: “ s’il croit que c’est jouer très bien ça, c’est quoi mal jouer?” ou, il est aussi possible de penser qu’il s’agit de Carey Price, le gardien qui a déjà dit aux journalistes “Calmez-vous”. Le gardien du CH n’est pas dupe, il est parfaitement au courant que ses chiffres sont peu reluisants présentement, mais il n’est pas le genre à en faire tout un plat et se mettre à analyser son jeu dans les menus détails. Price est de nature calme et confiante et ça ressort même dans sa manière d’interagir avec les médias.
Après 3 longues journées sans jouer, les Habs renoueront finalement avec l’action demain soir en accueillant les Maple Leafs au Centre Bell pour la première fois cette année. Le match commencera à 7:30 PM et vous pouvez vous attendre à voir Carey Price devant la cage du CH même si Julien ne l’a pas encore confirmé.
