Goalie Philipp Grubauer and UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital food service technician Maria Saavedra were named the NHL’s “First Stars” for the week ending Sunday.

The league is honoring frontline healthcare workers for their contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic from the regions represented by its weekly and monthly stars.

Here’s my NHL.com RECAP of Sunday’s 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings.

**********

The Kings had to stay overnight in Denver because of blizzard conditions and their scheduled home game against the St. Louis Blues has been postponed.

We got over two feet of snow in our neighborhood with more on the way Tuesday.

The Avalanche play the Anaheim Ducks at Ball Arena on Tuesday.

Saavedra works as a food service technician at UCHealth in Aurora, Colo., helping to prepare and deliver 1,500 food trays daily to patients. She enjoys offering patients a source of joy and solace during this difficult time.

“I enjoy people in general. I like talking to people, I like getting to know people,” Saavedra recently told 9NEWS Denver. “I think toward the beginning some people were scared to come to work. I was here every day. I started asking if I could pick up extra shifts. Those days were long, but it was worth it.”

Grubauer went 3-1-0 with a 1.24 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and one shutout in four starts.

He made 11 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Arizona Coyotes last Monday and 13 saves in a 2-1 overtime win against them on Wednesday. Grubauer followed with 18 saves in a 2-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Friday and 27 saves on Sunday in a 4-1 win against them.

Grubauer has started 22 of the Avalanche’s 25 games and has a 15-7-0 record with four shutouts, a 1.91 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.

He’s tied for first among league goalies in shutouts and second in wins, is third in GAA and sixth in save percentage.

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl was named second star and Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers third star.

Draisaitl had nine points (six goals, three assists) in four games. Ehlers had six points (three goals, three assists) in three games.
