The Carolina Hurricanes played three games last week and have an injured goaltender nearing a return. Here’s a recap of news and notes from the week.

HURRICANES LOSE ALL THREE GAMES

The Hurricanes lost all three of their games this week, falling 4-2 to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, before dropping their first two games of a series against the Columbus Blue Jackets, with one loss coming in overtime and the other in a shootout.

TERAVAINEN AND TROCHECK STILL OUT

Neither Teuvo Teravainen or Vincent Trocheck suited up for any of Carolina’s games this week. Teravainen is dealing with concussion symptoms and has played in only a single game since mid-February, while Trocheck has been out since March 9 with an upper-body injury.

MRAZEK CLOSE TO RETURN

After suffering a fractured thumb early in the year that required surgery, Petr Mrazek is expected to return soon. Mrazek is practicing with the team and the Hurricanes will have an interesting situation in net, once he’s ready to go.

As for our poll questions, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out.

QUESTION: Did you expect Jake Gardiner to be claimed off waivers?

(Votes: 410)

No: 64%
Yes: 36%

It was somewhat unexpected to see Gardiner on waivers and a part of me did think there was a chance he would end up getting claimed. However, the Hurricanes weren’t able to get his contract off the books that easily, as he cleared the following day.

QUESTION: Which goalie should be the odd man out, once Mrazek returns?

(Votes: 120)

James Reimer: 81%
Petr Mrazek: 12%
Alex Nedeljkovic: 8%

While Reimer has been decent this season, I think unfortunately he’s probably the third option. That said, if Mrazek stumbles upon returning, the Hurricanes shouldn’t hesitate to turn back to Reimer and run with Nedeljkovic/Reimer as a tandem. Reimer was arguably better than Mrazek last season and while Mrazek had a hot start to the year, his track record leaves questions about his consistency.
