Wings vs Panthers VII - and should Yzerman grab Gostisbehere?

Detroit has cap space to play with. There are two weeks left in the trade deadline, and Detroit should be having daily conversations. Whether we see some depth veterans depart, or just take on some money to help facilitate a deal for draft picks, I expect Detroit to be involved.

So, this morning’s waivers caught my eye. Philadelphia has decided to waive Shane Gostisbehere. The “rumor mill” is saying that this is to free up cap for a major trade (Taylor Hall?). The team may be hoping that “the Ghost” will be picked up, and I wonder if Yzerman is interested. A roadblock is the 4.5 million that the 27 year old blue liner is owed for the next 2 years. Detroit has the space, and 3 or 4 defensemen could be on the way out after this season (if not by trade).

Let me know if you think this is a pick up worth taking.

As for Florida, the Panthers are 4-2 in the season series with Detroit. Detroit is 2-3-1, which isn’t horrible based on how much Florida has seemed to have the Wing’s number the past few seasons. A small hiccup for the Sunrise cats, Ekblad is out. The 25 minute per night blue line stud took a nasty spill that may have him out for a while.

If Detroit splits the next two games, I’ll consider it a big step forward. Florida isn’t just a group of talented players, they are a good team. Players are going to step up to try and fill the void. That, to me, is the difference of a team that could compete in the post season. Too many teams are one or two injuries away from falling off the rails (particularly north of the border). They have a collection of immensely talented scorers, but not much appetite for defense or sacrifice. Coach Q knows how to coach a championship team. The kind that sees depth players step up in the post season while the top lines are tied up and/or cancelled out.

I’m not sad to see this particular series come to an end. Florida just seems to execute at will more often than not against Detroit. The “sunshine state” is a peninsula of pain right now, and should offer (if they face off) some impressive post season fireworks.

So, let me know what you think will happen. Can Detroit grab one more win in this series? Should Yzerman do his best Bill Murray impression and snag a ghost? The fun part of guessing as the trade deadline creeps closer is a bit like laying out the chess board for next year. A bag full of picks, some prospects, or even a veteran or two? It remains to be seen.
