Detroit so far - 13-23-6
14 games remaining
My prediction from January - 19 wins
Current place - 28th
First round pick without lottery win - between 4 and 6
*Detroit will have to go 6-8, 6-4-4, etc down the stretch. Essentially sub 500 at this point. I actually feel like I’ll end up being close on total wins. Nashville series ended with Detroit 2-5-1 (I’d predicted 4-4) so i was a bit off on this one.
Detroit’s valiant effort on Tuesday was replaced with a disgraceful “flop” on Thursday. Nashville ran up a 7-1 score for the second time this year. This time, it wasn’t Grimaldi who decided to score all his goals for the season in one night, it was Arvidsson. Watching someone who’s done nothing all season light up your team like that is like the “Bad news Bears” meets “Rudy” meets “Forrest Gump”. The only thing more difficult to look at than the score sheet was Borowiecki’s profile shot (or his cringeworthy shots with Eugene Melnyk in what could only be described as “tool time”. M.B. Looks a bit like the love child of Uncle Fester and a rock biter from “the never ending story”. Fair warning, you’ll never be able to get that out of your head if you look it up.
Childish barbs aside, these embarrassing outings are a not so gentle reminder of the rebuild. There are only 14 games left. If they’re like this it will be like a root canal done in 14 parts without being numbed up. At some point you just want to rip it out yourself. (Probably a better idea. Twice I’ve had a root canal and then the tooth broke anyway and had to be pulled. Could have saved a ton of dough with pliers and Jack Daniels). Up top, I’ve put my overall predictions for the season, and what Detroit would have to do to get there.
As for the bad news, we broke Bobby Ryan. Hopefully it is nothing more serious than just season ending. I liked BR at the beginning of the year before we lost Bert, Zadina and Fabbri for a bit. A healthy Bertuzzi, Ryan and Fabbri bring a lot of stability. Filppula and Helm are most likely done after this year. Glendening, even if he gets traded, may get an offer to come back if he doesn’t sign an extension elsewhere. Erne has probably earned an extension, and Svechnikov may be making a case as a bottom 6 guy too. He and Rasmussen will probably take over the Helm and Filppula slots in the bottom. For forwards, I think Berggren has the best chance to make this roster next year. Raymond could probably use an AHL season (or at least partial). Veleno could break through, but at this point I’d slate him for the AHL. Seider, unless something bad happens, is with the big boys. I’d love 2 right shot D on the power play with him and Hronek. So happy
No update on Petruzzelli yet. I hate to use the word, “need”, but it would be very helpful to keep him in the system. We are suffering in prospects for the net.
Finally, my hopes for guys IF they get traded:
Helm - Winnipeg. That’s his hometown. It would be fun for him and the family
Glendening - Boston, Washington, Toronto - Boston has still got some punch, and I think Glenny would fit in well there. Washington as well. If a center gets hurt, Glenny could have a chance to dish to some very potent scorers. As for Toronto, Hyman is a wolverine. They’re similar players and I think would get along well. Vegas would also be a good fit
Staal - Montreal. I think they have something special there, and he and Eric could live together (probably).
Bernier (if healthy) - Washington or Colorado - I think he’d fit in well in either spot.
Let me know who you want to see go where! (And Hell, MI is not an option, they don’t even have a hockey team)
