There isn’t all that much to say about tonight’s game aside from the usual criticism: slow start, second on the puck all night, lack of shots, lack of intensity etc. Suffice to say the Leafs were lightning fast out of the gate and they scored 16 seconds in and added 3 goals before the end of the first frame. The Habs did manage a couple of goals in the other 2 periods, but the Leafs’ lead was never really threatened.
Instead of focussing on what went wrong, I think it’s worth highlighting what went right, there wasn’t all that much, but it’s noteworthy. Poor Cayden Primeau was pulled from the game after a nightmarish first period and he was obviously crushed. During the intermission, he stayed out of the locker-room visibly trying to shake it off and his teammates went to see him and assure him that it wasn’t his fault. Good to see the veterans supporting the rookie and even another rookie do it, since Romanov also went to see him.
One of the very few highlights of the 2nd period was Cole Caufield’s first goal in regulation. He had started the game on the first line alongside Tatar and Danault but after a tough first and with Danault leaving the game early on, he landed on the 4th line with Staal and Perry. Staal applied some pressure on the forecheck and Corey Perry took over the puck before feeding Caufield in front of the net who had no difficulty getting it behind Jack Campbell. The youngster really has a knack for finding space.
After the goal, Caufield barely celebrated, you could read the “good job” he said to Corey Perry on his lips but that was about it. A rather sober celebration, just as it should have been. It’s about the team winning and not about Caufield scoring goals and the kid knows it. In the third, he also stickhandled his way to Jack Campbell but couldn’t beat him with his shot in close.
I must also talk about Arturri Lehkonen, not so long ago, he had fallen out of favours with Ducharme, but tonight, he was one of the rare ones who came to play. At one point in the second period, he back checked like a mad man to stop a Leafs scoring chance and when the play made its way to the other end, who was there to get a shot on goal in close? That’s right, Lehkonen. He didn’t score there, but he got a goal that was thoroughly deserved early in the 3rd.
Finally, Jake Allen was nearly flawless in 40 minutes and even though the goalie change didn’t seem to give a boost to his team as it normally should have, at least he stopped the Leafs’ picnic in the park. Only Auston Matthews managed to find the back of the net (his 40th of the season) once he came in. Toronto took this one 5-2.
The Habs will have a chance to both avenge tonight’s loss and set the table for their very likely first round series against the Leafs, a first since 1979. Hopefully, Philip Danault will be available for the game, here’s to hoping that he was pulled from tonight’s fiasco as a precautionary measure, given that a comeback was unlikely. Ducharme only said that he didn't think he would be MIA long term. As per usual, Saturday’s game will start at 7:00 PM and hopefully, the Canadiens will come to play.
Il n’y a pas grand-chose à dire sur le match de ce soir, si ce n’est que les critiques habituelles; un lent début, deuxième sur la rondelle toute la soirée, pas assez de lancers, pas assez d’intensité etc…Il suffit de dire que les Leafs sont sortis en force et ont ouvert la marque après seulement 16 secondes, rajoutant 3 autres buts avant la fin du premier vingt. Les Habs sont bien allés chercher 2 buts avant la fin de match, mais l’avance des Leafs n’a jamais vraiment été menacée.
Plutôt que de me concentrer sur ce qui s’est mal passé ce soir, je crois que ça vaut la peine de noter ce qui s’est bien passé, il n’y a pas des tonnes d’exemples mais tout de même. Le pauvre Cayden Primeau a été retiré du match après une première période affreuse et il était visiblement défait. Pendant l’entracte, il est resté seul hors du vestiaire du CH essayant d’avaler la pilule et ses coéquipiers sont allés le voir tour à tour pour lui assurer que ce n’était pas sa faute. C’était bien de voir les vétérans aller rassurer la recrue et même une recrue s’y mettre également, puisque Romanov a fait de même.
Un des rares faits saillants de la 2e période a été le premier but de Cole Caufield en temps régulier. Il avait commencé le match sur la première ligne avec Tatar et Danault, mais après une première période difficile et le départ de Danault, il s’est retrouvé sur le 4e trio avec Staal et Perry. Staal a mis de la pression en échec-avant, permettant à Perry de s’emparer du disque et de le remettre à Caufield devant le filet, qui n’a eu aucun mal à le loger derrière Jack Campbell. Le jeune avant a définitivement du flair pour se démarquer.
Après le but, Caufield n’a presque pas célébré, on a pu lire sur ses lèvres le “good job” qu’il a lancé à Corey Perry mais ce fut à peu près tout. Définitivement une célébration sobre tel qu’elle devait l’être. L’important, c’est que l’équipe gagne et non pas que Caufield marque et le jeune est parfaitement au courant. En 3e, il s’est aussi faufilé devant Jack Campbell, mais il n’a pas pu le battre avec un lancer de près.
Je me dois également de parler d’Arturri Lehkonen, il n’y a pas si longtemps, il était rayé de la formation par Ducharme, mais ce soir, il fut l’un des rares qui s’est présenté pour jouer. Pendant la deuxième période, il s’est replié en déchaînée pour aller contrer une chance de marquer des Leafs et quand le jeu s’est transporté à l’autre extrémité, qui était là pour prendre un tir? Eh oui, ce même Lehkonen. Il n’a pas marqué sur cette chance, mais il a obtenu un but des plus mérités tôt en 3e.
Finalement, Jake Allen a été quasi parfait en relève à Cayden Primeau pendant 40 minutes et même si le changement de gardien n’a pas donné l’électrochoc escompter à son club, au moins, il a mis fin au pique-nique offensif des Leafs. Seul Auston Matthews a réussi à le battre (son 40e de la saison) pendant le dernier 20. Toronto a donc remporté le match 5-2.
Les Habs auront une chance de venger ce cuisant revers et de mettre la table pour sa fort probable série de première ronde contre les Leafs, une première depuis 1979. Espérons que Philip Danault sera disponible pour le match et que son retrait d’aujourd’hui n’était qu’une précaution comme l’issue du match semblait déjà scellé. Ducharme s'est contenté de dire qu'il ne croyait pas que ce serait une absence à long terme. Comme à l’habitude, le match de samedi débutera à 7:00 pm, avec un peu de chance, le CH se présentera.
