Marc Bergevin has been at this for 9 long years, fans of the Montreal Canadiens have been waiting for a Stanley Cup Championship for 28 years now and when Bergevin was hired and told them about a 5-year plan, they were excited. 9 years later, which is to say almost 2 5-year plan later, the team is nowhere near drinking out of hockey’s ultimate chalice.

It’s understandable that fans are running out of patience with Bergevin, he came aboard and promised to deliver, which he didn’t. When he learnt to ply his trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, first as a pro scout, then as an assistant-coach and finally, as an assistant GM, he saw the Hawks draft Toews and Kane and win a Cup 4 years after Toews arrival. The difference is though, they went through a full rebuilt, didn’t make the playoffs 5 years in a row and picked 3rd overall twice, 1st overall once in a span of 4 years. Furthermore, they chose wisely.

Since Bergevin’s arrival, the team has picked 3rd twice, once in 2012 (Galchenyuk) and the other time in 2018 (Kotkaniemi), aside from that, they’ve had late first round picks or middle of the pack ones. They did pick 9th one year and got Sergachev who they later sacrificed to address an organizational need, or so they thought.

Bergevin took some pages out of the Hawks’ playbook, but not all of them and the ones he omitted were kind of important. It was unrealistic for him to talk of a 5-year plan and it’s fair that the fans are running out of patience, but they shouldn’t be running out of patience with everyone in the organization.

Case in point; Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The former 3rd overall pick is often the subject of unkind statements calling him a bust or saying that he should be traded because he’s not proven his worth yet. The man is 20-years old, in the words of prime years Carey Price: “Chill out”. Not everyone peaks straight out after the draft. For every Connor McDavid, there are a 100 Aleksander Barkov. Speaking of which, in his first 2 years, Barkov got 24 points in 54 games and 36 points in 71 matches. As for KK, he had 34 in 79 games and 8 in 36 before being sent down.

Barkov improved little by little over the years until he reached 96 points in 82 games 6 years after being drafted. Joe Thorton had 7 points in 55 games in his rookie season and broke the 100 points barrier 6 years after being drafted. So before people go on a rampage and demand that Kotkaniemi be traded or sing the praises of Brady Tkachuk while dumping on KK, perhaps they could give him a bit of time no? He may never be as productive as Barkov or Thornton, but let’s give him a chance shall we?
