The San Jose Sharks played four games this week and a goaltending prospect made his first NHL start. Here's a recap of news and notes from the week.
SHARKS WIN ONE OF FOUR GAMES
The Sharks picked up four of a possible eight points this week, going 1-1-2 overall. The Sharks split a series with the Colorado Avalanche, before dropping back-to-back games to the Arizona Coyotes.
MELNICHUK MAKES FIRST NHL START
Goaltender Alexei Melnichuk made his first NHL start this week, in a game against the Arizona Coyotes. Melnichuk was signed in the offseason and has spent the year with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. The Sharks lost the game 5-4 in overtime, with Melnichuk stopping 27 of 32 shots in the loss.
BARABANOV CONTINUES HOT STREAK WITH SHARKS
Forward Alexander Barabanov continued his strong play this week, after being acquired at the trade deadline from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The forward had a goal and three points in four games, bringing his total to three goals and seven points in eight games with San Jose.
COUTURE AND LEONARD INJURED, GAMBRELL RETURNS
Sharks forward John Leonard is likely out for the rest of the season, after going head first into the boards against the Arizona Coyotes. Logan Couture also missed both of San Jose’s games against the Coyotes with a lower-body injury, while Dylan Gambrell returned to the lineup after missing time with a foot injury. Joachim Blichfeld, Radim Simek and Matt Nieto all remain out for the Sharks.
As for our poll question, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out:

Josef Korenar: 95%
Martin Jones: 5%
As the article that included this poll question suggests, this should be a very easy decision for the Sharks. Korenar is just 23 years old and has performed relatively well for the Sharks, while Jones is 31 years old and is on a very overpriced contract.
