The Cleveland monsters posted some interviews this past season, Wyatt is one of the featured players in this clip. His intro is at 1:35
Wyatt Newpower has signed a 2 year ELC with Detroit. This one came out of left field a bit, but again, Yzerman never sleeps.
The interesting spin is that he played for the Columbus AHL affiliate the Cleveland Monsters. A big (6’4”) right shot D man wasn’t on many shopping lists for the Hockeybuzz faithful. From the little bit I’ve found so far, Wyatt moved to Cleveland last summer and trained with Nathan Gerbe to get ready for the AHL season. His roommate in college was a CBJ draft pick. With such a strange season, Yzerman and Co most have liked something about the defenseman’s game and got him signed. It will be nice to get a better look at the development and training camps this summer
Here is the press release regarding WN’s collegiate career courtesy of NHL.com:
Prior to signing a one-year AHL contract with Cleveland on April 6, 2020, Newpower concluded a four-year career at the University of Connecticut in 2019-20, pacing the team with a plus-23 rating and leading the school's defensemen with a collegiate career-best 22 points (3-19-22) in 34 games as captain of the Huskies. He tied for fifth on Connecticut in scoring and for sixth among all Hockey East defensemen.
A native of Hugo, Minn., Newpower totaled 47 points (11-36-47) and 68 penalty minutes in 114 games at Connecticut from 2016-20, capping off his career with the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman Award, as well as a spot on the Hockey East Second All-Star Team. Newpower also led his school's defensemen in points as a junior in 2018-19, notching 14 points (3-11-14) in 34 games. Prior to his collegiate career, Newpower skated four seasons at White Bear Lake High School in Minnesota, logging 73 points (19-54-73) and 81 penalty minutes in 101 games from 2012-16, where he was a two-time Defenseman of the Year Award winner.
