Quick Hits: June 6, 2021

Note: I am taking a short vacation (June 7 to 9) with my wife, and will not be writing while I am away. The blog will resume per usual on June 10. To extend the shelf-life of the blog for a few days, today's is largely geared toward recently posted Flyers-related podcasts.

1) On the new edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus had a nearly half-hour conversation with Flyers vice president and assistant general manager Brent Flahr. The topics include Flahr's assessment of the 2021 NHL Draft class, the keys to building an NHL roster internally, the progress of Tyson Foerster and other top prospects, and more. Definitely worth the listen: Click here.

2) On the current edition of the Nasty Knuckles Podcast, co-hosts Riley Cote and Derek Settlemyre talk to Flyers center Scott Laughton. As usual, the personal familiarity between the hosts and the guests creates an instant rapport that makes the interview a bit different than others conducted with the same subject. To listen, click here.

3) Best of luck to the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors as they take on the Minnesota St. Cloud Warriors in the championship round of the Hendry Foundation 2021 National Hockey Festival. The St. Cloud team is the only one that beat the Flyers Warriors in the round robin portion of the tourney, although the Flyers Warriors also played to one tie as well.

4) On the current edition of the "My Dad Used to Play Hockey" podcast, Zak Kindrachuk interviews the Flyers Hall of Fame brother duo of Joe and Jimmy Watson: Click here.

Recently, I had a working lunch at Chickie's and Pete's in South Philly with the Watson brothers and Bernie Parent to collect anecdotes for Joe's upcoming autobiography. It was a very enjoyable two hours with loads of great stories from the old days, such as the time Bernie visited Joe in British Columbia during the offseason and went bear hunting -- from a train).

4) On the current edition of the Parent/Favell Gen-X Podcast, co-hosts Kim Parent and Corey Favell have a discussion with Bernie Parent (Kim's dad) and Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere, on the "French-Canadian Connection" edition of the podcast. To listen, click here.

5) On the Flyers official website, I wrote a memorial article for Donna Ashbee, who was instrumental in the Flyers Wives Carnival becoming an annual event. For many years, the Carnival was specifically devoted to the memory of Donna's husband, Barry Ashbee, and raised money for leukemia research and treatment. Nowadays, Flyers Charities supports a variety of different charities through the Carnival proceeds. For more, click here.

Coming later this week on the Flyers official site: a deep dive analysis on the Flyers' power play in 2020-21 and what needs to improve for next season.

6) Today in Flyers History: On June 6, 1986, the Flyers acquired defensemen J.J. Daigneault from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Rich Sutter and defenseman Dave Richter. The Flyers also received a 1986 second-round pick (Kent Hawley, who went on to a lengthy minor-league career in the AHL and other leagues) in the trade.
