It started well for Montreal they were dictating the play early on, dominating on the shot clock and quickly quieting the Vegas crowd. Unfortunately, a clean face-off win in the offensive zone lead to a beauty of a shot for Shea Theodore and Vegas jumped to a 1-0 lead they would never lose. With that goal, the Habs’ streak of 447 minutes and 8 seconds without trailing came to a halt, it’s the second longest of the sort in history.
The first goal of the game wasn’t the turning point for me though, that was at the start of the second period when Ben Chiarot took a delay of game penalty, sending the puck out of bounds behind Fleury’s net all the way from his own zone. That put the Habs down by two men and from then on, they looked like they were chasing both their tail and the game.
Tonight, the Habs took 4 penalties and that ended up killing their own rhythm. From 12 shots in the first, they took 5 in the second and 12 in the 3rd. You cannot overcome a 2-goal deficit with so little shots in a period, especially since Marc-André Fleury can sometimes be the architect of his own bad luck with the juicy rebounds he dishes out.
Bottom line is though, if the Canadiens can stick to their style of play and stay out of the box, they can definitely compete with this Vegas team. Other positives from the games include Alexander Romanov’s play, showing no sign of nerves whatsoever, the young blue liner drew the first penalty of the game and landed a bone-crushing hit on none other than Alex Pietrangelo.
As for Cole Caufield, he finally popped his scoring cherry in the playoffs with a powerplay marker. Even better, his family had made the trip and they finally got to see him play in the NHL.
Vegas was smart with its shooting, they put traffic in front of Price and when there was no traffic, they faked shots and forced him to move off balance. Still, he made some spectacular saves and reminded everyone that he is a true playoff performer. In the last 5 minutes of the 3rd period, it looked like Shea Weber re-injured his right thumb and that could definitely spell trouble for the Canadiens who are already dearly missing Jeff Petry.
After a 4-1 defeat and down 1-0 in the series, the Canadiens must now shake it off and move on. They weren’t going to keep this winning streak going forever and it takes 4 games to wrap up a series, so it’s far from a done deal for the Golden Knights. If I was a betting woman, I’d put some money on Petry being in the line-up for the next game.

Malheureusement, une nette victoire au cercle des mises en jeu en zone offensive pour Vegas a mené à un excellent lancé de Shea Theodore et Vegas a pris les devants 1-0, une avance qu’ils n’allaient jamais perdre. Avec ce but, la sequence de 447 minutes et 8 secondes sans tirer de l’arrière à pris fin, la deuxième plus longue de ce genre de l’histoire.
Le premier but n’a pas été le point tournant du match à mon avis, c’est plutôt la punition pour avoir retardé le match qu’a pris Chiarot tôt en 2e période en envoyant la rondelle dans le filet protecteur à l’autre bout de la glace à partir de son propre territoire. Cette punition plaçait les Habs dans une position vulnérable avec 2 hommes en moins et à partir de là, ils ont eu l’air d’un chien qui courait après sa propre queue et ils ont passé le reste de la soirée à essayer de se remettre dans le match.
Ce soir, le CH a pris 4 punitions et celle-ci ont tué leur propre rythme. De 12 tirs en première, ils sont passé à 5 en deuxième et 12 en troisième. C’est impossible de rattraper un retard de 2 buts avec si peu de lancers en 2e, surtout puisque Fleury peut être l’architecte de ses propres malheurs avec les rebonds juteux qu’il peut distribuer.
Au final, si les Canadiens peuvent s’en tenir à leur style de jeu et éviter le banc des punitions, ils peuvent définitivement compétitionner avec Vegas. Les autres points positifs de ce match incluent le jeu d’Alexander Romanov, qui a fait preuve de sang-froid, le jeune défenseur a provoqué la première punition du match en plus d’appliquer une percutante mise en échec sur Alex Pietrangelo.
Quant à Cole Caufield, il a finalement trouvé le fond du filet en séries avec un but sur l’avantage numérique. Encore mieux, sa famille avait fait le voyage et ils ont pu le voir jouer dans la LNH pour la première fois.
Les Knights ont été intelligents dans leurs choix de tirs, ils ont mis de la circulation devant Price et quand il n’y en avait pas, ils ont fait mine de tirer pour le forcer à se déplacer en déséquilibre. Tout de même, il a effectué des arrêts spectaculaires et a rappelé à tout le monde qu’il demeure un vrai compétiteur en séries. Dans les 5 dernières minutes de la 3e période, Shea Weber a semblé se blesser de nouveau au pouce droit et ça pourrait être un gros problème pour Montréal qui s’ennuie déjà désespérément de Jeff Petry.
Après une défaite de 4-1 et un retard de 1-0 dans les séries, les Canadiens se doivent de tourner la page rapidement. Ils n’allaient pas continuer leur série de victoire indéfiniment et il faut 4 victoires pour remporter une série, c’est loin d’être dans le sac pour Vegas. Si j’étais une parieuse, je mettrais de l’argent sur la présence de Jeff Petry pour le prochain match.
