Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin was named as the winner of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy yesterday, for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct.
The other finalists for the award were Auston Matthews from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jared Spurgeon from the Minnesota Wild. He had just one penalty in 52 games this season and is just the fourth defenseman in NHL history to win the award. Slavin had finished fourth in voting for the award last year.
The news came just two days after head coach Rod Brind’Amour was named the winner of the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.
