The Carolina Hurricanes could reportedly be moving on from forwards Warren Foegele and Jordan Martinook this offseason.
According to Elliotte Friedman on the 31 Thoughts Podcast, there have been trade talks involving Foegele, noting that both the player and team want a change. With Martinook, apparently his family feels as though he will be testing the free agency market, according to a Facebook post.
Foegele is a restricted free agent and scored 10 goals and 20 points in 53 games this year, a pace of 15 goals and 31 points per 82 games. The 25-year-old winger has been a regular member of the team’s forward group for the last three years, scoring a total of 35 goals and 68 points in 200 career NHL games.
Martinook is an unrestricted free agent and has also been with the team for the last three years. He’s turning 29 years old this month and had four goals and 13 points in 44 games this season.
ANALYSIS
I think Martinook leaving shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but Foegele being involved in trade talks is interesting. He’s still quite young and is a pretty decent bottom-six forward.
That said, I thought his one-year contract was a bit overpriced last year and if he’s now looking for something longer and the Hurricanes can’t keep the number low, they can likely replace him with a cheaper depth option. He could also be lost in the expansion draft for nothing, depending on what Carolina’s protection list looks like, should the Hurricanes opt to keep him. Foegele’s value at the moment is likely in the range of a third-round pick.
