Per Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News, the Seattle Kraken have selected Will Borgen in the expansion draft.

Borgen, a 2015 4th round pick, cracked the lineup on a full-time basis for the first time in the 2021 season. Injury limited him to only 10 games played this season but he looked like a solid, steady defensive defenseman.

General Manager Kevyn Adams elected to protect Rasmus Ristolainen rather than the younger Borgen. Although Borgen fits the Sabres timeline better than Ristolainen, Adams clearly felt the risk of losing Ristolainen was too great.

I believe the Sabres should have protected Borgen and allowed the Kraken to choose either Colin Miller or Rasmus Ristolainen. Losing Borgen, in whom the Sabres have invested 5 years of development, is a blow to the organization that was totally preventable. Kevyn Adams will need to justify that loss through the return on Ristolainen.
