Today was a busy day in the NHL not only was the first round of the draft held tonight, but we were treated to a bit of a trade frenzy in the run up to the big evening for so many young men. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Seth Jones, Jake Bean, Adam Boqvist, Conor Garland, Antoine Roussel, Jay Beagle, Louie Eriksson, Antoine Roussel, Pavel Buchnevich, Rasmus Ristolainen and Robert Hagg are some of the names that were on the move today but none of them are coming to Montreal.
The Canadiens didn’t acquire anyone during the day, but they did get someone back. The team confirmed that Carey Price had underwent a knee surgery and that his recovery was expected to take 10 to 12 weeks. This means that the Canadiens’ top goaltender will be fit and ready a week prior to the start of the regular season. Furthermore, it was confirmed that his hip injury wouldn’t require surgery, making this a double whammy of good news for Marc Bergevin’s team.
Prior to the draft, many reported that the Canadiens had let it be known that they were willing to move their first-round pick (31st overall) which got every single Hab fan to pay attention. With the loss of Shea Weber, the Canadiens need some help, and they need it now. I was hoping to see a new blue liner make his way to Montreal (and not another Jon Merril), but it wasn’t to be. The good news is, there are still some good candidates on the market, such as Douggie Hamilton for instance, but the bad news is he won’t be cheap considering the Hawks just signed Seth Jones to an 8-year extension at $ 9.5 M per.
It wasn’t all bad news though as the Bruins reached an agreement with Taylor Hall today, a 4-year pact at $ 6 M per. How is that good news? Well, if Danault is indeed asking for $6 M he may just realize that he won’t be able to get it if an offensive player like Hall can’t break the bank. The man did have a 93 points season in 2017-2018 and you’ve got to wonder if that may make Danault think twice before hitting the market.
At gone 11:30 PM, it was finally time for the Canadiens to make their pick and much like every team before them, they took the full 5 minutes to put their pick in. I was hoping that Zachary L’Heureux would slide all the way down to 31 and still be there for the Canadiens to select but the Preds grabbed him at 27. Marc Bergevin announced that the Habs decided to go for defenseman Logan Mailloux, much to most everyone’s amazement. For those who don’t know about it, Mailloux asked that no team select him 3 days ago because of a fine for an offence of a sexual nature committed in Sweden last year. In short, he took a picture of himself, and a woman engaged in a sexual act without she consented to the picture, and he then put it on Snapchat to show his teammates.
Now, Logan Mailloux is a right-handed defenseman who is quite tall at 6’3” and weights 214 pounds. I know right-handed blue liner are rare in the Habs’ pipeline, but I cannot help but think this is an awful pick. The man had asked himself that teams not pick him, and this organization has always prided itself with being a franchise who values character… Marc Bergevin praised Weber for changing the culture of the organization and now he goes and makes this flabbergasting selection. How do you go from trading PK Subban for being a distraction in the room to selecting the kind of guy who would do this? I’m sorry, maybe it’s because I’m a woman, but I just cannot get on board with this pick. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks who had the last pick of the first round after the Habs had a group of women on the podium to announce their pick, they were chosen because they are contributing to the advancement of women in sports and they are examples to follow… Congrats to the Blackhawks for showing what a classy organization can do, as for the Habs, I don’t remember ever being ashamed of this team…until now.
Ce fut une journée occupée dans le circuit Bettman aujourd’hui, non seulement le repêchage avait lieu ce soir, mais pendant la journée, nous avons eu droit à un festival d’échange en attend le plus grand soir de la vie de nombreux jeunes hommes. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Seth Jones, Jake Bean, Adam Boqvist, Conor Garland, Antoine Roussel, Jay Beagle, Louie Eriksson, Antoine Roussel, Pavel Buchnevich, Rasmus Ristolainen et Robert Hagg sont quelques-uns des joueurs qui ont changé d’adresse mais aucun d’eux n’a pris la direction de Montréal.
Les Canadiens n’ont acquis personne pendant la journée, mais ils ont tout de même récupéré quelqu’un. L’équipe a confirmé que Carey Price avait subi une opération au genou avec succès et que son temps de convalescence serait de 10 à 12 semaines. Ce qui signifie donc que le gardien numéro 1 du CH sera fin prêt à reprendre du service une semaine avant le début de la saison régulière. De plus, nous avons maintenant la confirmation que sa blessure à une hanche ne nécessitera pas d’opération, un duo de bonne nouvelle pour l’équipe de Marc Bergevin.
Avant le repêchage, de nombreuses sources avançaient que le CH avait laissé savoir aux autres équipes qu’il était prêt à échanger son choix de 1ere ronde (31e au total) ce qui a bien sûr capté l’attention de tous les fans du Tricolore. Avec la perte de Shea Weber, les Canadiens ont besoin d’aide, et ils en ont besoin maintenant. J’espérais voir un nouveau défenseur se joindre à la ligne bleue de la Sainte-Flanelle (et pas un autre Merrill svp), mais ce n’est juste pas arrive. La bonne nouvelle est qu’il reste toujours de bons candidats sur le marché comme Douggie Hamilton par exemple, mais la mauvaise nouvelle c’est qu’avec la prolongation de contrat obtenu par Seth Jones (8 ans $9.5 M par an), il ne sera pas à très bon marché.
Il y a quand même eu de bonnes nouvelles alors que Boston s’est entendu avec Taylor Hall sur un nouveau contrat de 3 ans à $6 M par an. Comment est-ce que c’est une bonne nouvelle? Et bien simplement si Danault recherche vraiment un contrat avec un salaire de $6M il pourrait réaliser de lui-même qu’il ne l’obtiendrait pas puisqu’un joueur offensif de la trempe de Hall n’arrive pas à faire sauter la banque. Hall a quand même connu une saison de 93 points pendant la saison 2017-2018 et vous devez vous dire qu’il n’est plus le tortionnaire des petits nouveaux.
Finalement, il était passé 11:30 PM quand le tour du CH est finalement venu de parler et tout comme les autres équipes avant eux, ils ont pris les 5 minutes complètes pour finaliser leur choix. J’espérais que Zachary L’Heureux serait toujours disponible quand viendrait le tour du Tricolore mais les Prédateurs l’ont choisi au 27e rang. Marc Bergevin a finalement annoncé que le CH sélectionnait Logan Mailloux à la stupéfaction générale. Pour ceux qui ne le saurait pas, Mailloux a demandé il y a 3 jours que personne ne le repêche en raison d’une amende reçue en lien avec une infraction de nature sexuelle commise en Suède l’an dernier. Pour faire une histoire courte, Mailloux avait pris une photo de lui et d’une femme alors qu’ils étaient engagés dans un acte sexuel sans que celle-ci consente à la prise de la photo et l’avait envoyé à ses coéquipiers par le biais de Snapchat.
Je vais tout d’abord dire que Logan Mailloux est un défenseur droitier format géant à 6’3” et 214 livres. Je sais que les défenseurs droitiers sont extrêmement rares dans le système du CH, mais je ne peux m’empêcher de dire qu’il s’agit là d’un choix affreux. Le gars a lui-même demandé à ne pas être sélectionné et de voir une organisation qui a toujours prêché le bon caractère le choisir… Marc Bergevin a louangé Shea Weber pour avoir changé la culture de l’organisation et ensuite il y va de cette sélection douteuse, inapproprié et incompréhensible ? Comment passe-t-on d’échanger P.K. Subban parce qu’il était une distraction dans le vestiaire à choisir un gars qui a fait cela ? Je suis désolée, peut-être que c’est parce que je suis une femme mais je suis incapable d’accepter cette sélection. Pendant ce temps, les Blackhawks qui détenaient le dernier choix de la ronde après la sélection du CH avait sur le podium des femmes qui faisaient avancer le sport féminin et qui sont des exemples à suivre… Bravo aux Blackhawks d’avoir démontré de la classe et du leadership, quant aux Canadiens, je ne me souviens pas avoir eu honte de cette équipe avant ce soir…
