The Carolina Hurricanes made two trades last night, sending defenseman Jake Bean to the Columbus Blue Jackets, while also trading their first-round pick to the Nashville Predators.

In exchange for Bean, the Hurricanes received the 44th pick in this year’s draft and in dealing the 27th-overall pick, they also added picks 40 and 51 from the Predators.

Bean is 23 years old and made the jump to the NHL this season, where he scored a goal and 12 points in 42 games. He’s currently a restricted free agent.

I’ll go more in-depth on the Bean trade in the coming days but as a note, I don’t like this deal for Carolina. Bean certainly had some defensive issues but he’s young and there’s definitely still a chance that he can become a top-four defenseman. His contract extension wasn’t going to cost much and to me, it would’ve been much more worthwhile to keep him around and hope he rounds out his game, rather than flipping him for a second-round pick.

In other smaller news, the Hurricanes also re-signed forward Spencer Smallman to a one-year contract, with a $750,000 cap hit.
