Things change fast in the NHL, prior to the playoffs in Montreal it looked like everyone was on the verge of being sacked but after an unforeseen Stanley Cup final run, everyone is staying on. General manager Marc Bergevin started by offering a new 3-year pact to his head coach Dominique Ducharme before doing the same the next day for assistant-coach Luke Richardson. It took a bit more time, but today it was announced that assistant-coach Alex Burrows had signed a similar deal.
Burrows ended up behind the Habs’ bench when Dominique Ducharme was appointed interim head coach on February 24 and was asked to focus on both the forwards and the power play. Under is tutelage, the Habs’ power play had a 19.8% success rate and the Canadiens scored 97 goals in their final 38 regular season games for 2.55 goals per game. In the playoffs, the numbers were also respectable with the man-advantage unit scoring 18.9% of the time and the offense putting the puck in the back of the net 51 times in 22 games.
Before turning to coaching, Burrows enjoyed a lengthy 13-year career in the NHL (913 games) in which he gathered 409 points and 1,134 penalty minutes. Most of his playing career was spent in Vancouver alongside the Sedin twins before ending-up in Ottawa for a couple of seasons. Upon retiring, he joined Joel Bouchard’s staff behind the Laval Rocket bench and stayed there for a couple of seasons before being promoted to the big league.

Le directeur-gérant Marc Bergevin a commencé par offrir un nouveau contrat de 3 ans à son entraîneur-chef Dominique Ducharme avant de faire la même chose pour son assistant-entraîneur Luke Richardson. Il a fallu un peu plus de temps, mais ce matin, le CH a confirmé que Burrows avait lui aussi signé un nouveau contrat de 3 ans également.
Burrows s’est retrouvé derrière le banc des Habs lorsque Dominique Ducharme a été nommé entraîneur-chef par intérim le 24 février et on lui avait confié la responsabilité de l’avantage numérique et des attaquants. Sous sa gouverne, le surnombre des Habs a eu un tôt de succès de 19.8% et le CH a marqué 97 buts en 38 matchs, bon pour un nombre de buts par match de 2.55. Dans les séries, les chiffres étaient également raisonnables avec l’avantage numérique marquant 18.9% du temps et l’offensive produisant 51 buts en 22 matchs.
Avant de devenir entraîneur, Burrows a connu un beau parcours dans la LNH y passant 13 ans (913 matchs) et amassant 409 points et 1134 minutes de punition. Il a passé la plus grande partie de sa carrière à Vancouver avec les jumeaux Sedin avant de passer ses deux dernières saisons avec les Sénateurs. Une fois à la retraite, il a passé 2 ans derrière le banc du Rocket de Laval aux côtés de Joel Bouchard et y a passé 2 saisons avant d’être promu à la grande ligue.
