Jesperi Kotkaniemi is now a member of the Carolina Hurricanes, as the Montreal Canadiens have decided not to match the Hurricanes’ offer sheet to the forward.

Kotkaniemi’s contract with the Hurricanes will be for one-year and will carry a $6.1 million cap hit. He’ll be a restricted free agent next summer when the deal expires. As compensation for the offer sheet, the Canadiens will receive the Hurricanes’ first and third-round picks in 2022.

The forward was selected third overall in 2018. Kotkaniemi is 21 years old and played a total of 171 games with the Canadiens, scoring 22 goals and 62 points.

This marks the first time in 14 years that an offer sheet has not been matched.
