David Backes signs one-day contract with Blues, announces retirement

Forward David Backes has announced his retirement, signing a one-day contract with the St. Louis Blues, in order to retire as a member of his former team.


Backes is 37 years old and was acquired by the Ducks from the Boston Bruins in February of 2020. He played a total of 21 games with Anaheim from the time of the trade, scoring three goals and seven points.

He played a total of 965 career games, with only the Blues, Bruins and Ducks. Backes spent five years as the captain of the Blues, playing 727 games with the team.
