The Canadiens’ selected Poehling with their first-round pick in 2017, 25th overall. Back then, much like now, the Habs were in dire need of good centers. After his 3 years in the NCAA with St. Cloud State, he signed his 3-year entry level contract and took part in the Canadiens’ final game of the season against Toronto. He arrived in Montreal with a bang, scoring a hat-trick in that game and adding the game-winner in the shootout. Needless to say, but that kind of debut in Montreal is much more of a curse than a blessing. Having the game of your life right off the bat sets up unrealistic expectations both for the athlete and for the fans, the organization though, saw through it.
In St. Cloud, Poehling wasn’t an offensive dynamo, his 3 seasons ended with points total of 13, 31 and 31in regular seasons of 36 games. Once he played his first game in the NHL, Poehling was sent down to Laval to learn to be a pro under Joel Bouchard’s tutelage. For him, it was a disappointment, after his fantastic debut, the kid wanted to make the big leagues and he was down on himself. After the Covid break, he came back saying that he had taken some time-off since he had a busy year and he needed some R & R, that was the best way to buy himself a spot on the Rocket roster once again.
He had an offensive breakthrough in Laval last season with 25 points in 28 games before being sidelined by a wrist injury, but this time around it’s a much more mature Poehling that has showed up in camp. This new and improve version states that every player is on his own development path and that you have to embrace it to get where you want to go. This new approach earned Poehling a lot of positive comments yesterday and so did his play on the ice. Completing a line with Lehkonen and Dauphin, he looked energetic and focused out there.
Chances are Jake Evans has the inside track for the 3rd line center, for now at least, but if Poehling can make a good enough impression, he’ll finally earn a roster spot with the Canadiens as the 4th line center and that will be a start. Evans doesn’t have a 1st round pick pedigree but what he does have is an irreproachable work ethic and that’s how he made his way from 7th round pick (pick 207 overall in 2014) to a regular NHLer.
The Canadiens have seen so many of their draft pick leave the organization or just fall off the map that a couple of successful in-house development stories would do them some good and Ryan Poehling and Cole Caufield may be on their way to imitate Jake Evans and become intricate parts of this team… Let’s hope it’s the case when the puck drops on October 13.

Après ses 3 ans dans la NCAA avec St. Cloud State, il a signé son contrat d’entrée de 3 ans avant de prendre part au dernier match de la saison du CH contre Toronto. Il n’a pas raté son entrée en scène, comptant un tour du chapeau en plus d’ajouter le but gagnant en fusillade. C’est quasi inutile de le dire, mais ce genre de début à Montréal est beaucoup plus une malédiction qu’une bénédiction. Connaître le match de sa vie en levée de rideau amène des attentes non réalistiques tant pour l’athlète, que pour les partisans, mais l’organisation elle, n’y a pas vu que du feu.

Après avoir joué son premier match dans la LNH, Poehling a été envoyé à Laval la saison suivante pour apprendre à devenir un vrai pro sous la gouverne de Joel Bouchard. Pour lui, il s’agissait d’une déception, après un fantastique premier match, le jeune homme voulait jouer dans la grande ligue et ce fut un coup dur pour lui. Après la pause forcée par la Covid, il est revenu en disant qu’il avait pris du temps pour se reposer, qu’il en avait besoin après avoir connu des saisons mouvementées, c’était la meilleure façon de se mériter une place dans l’alignement du Rocket une fois de plus.
La saison dernière, il a connu un réveil offensif, accumulant 25 points en 28 matchs avant d’être mis en échec par une blessure au poignet, mais cette fois, c’est un Poehling beaucoup plus mature qui s’est présenté au camp. Cette version nouvelle et améliorée a déclaré hier que chaque joueur suit sa propre voie et qu’il lui faut accepter celle-ci afin de se rendre là où il désire aller. Cette nouvelle approche lui a valu de nombreux commentaires positifs hier, tout comme son jeu sur la glace. Complétant un trio avec Lehkonen et Dauphin, il était énergique et concentré.
Les chances sont que Jake Evans est le favori pour se mériter le rôle de 3e centre, pour l’instant du moins, mais si Poehling arrive à faire bonne impression, il se méritera finalement un rôle dans l’alignement du CH, peut-être seulement à titre de 4e centre, mais ce sera déjà ça de pris. Evans n’a pas le pedigree d’un choix de premier tour, mais ce qu’il a en revanche, c’est une éthique de travail irréprochable et c’est comme ça qu’il est passé de choix de 7e ronde (207 au total en 2014) à joueur régulier dans la LNH.
Les Canadiens ont vu nombre de leurs premiers choix quitter l’organisation ou tout simplement disparaître de la carte et de voir quelques histoires de développement à l’interne positives viendrait calmer le jeu et Ryan Poehling et Cole Caufield pourraient être sur le bon chemin pour imiter Jake Evans et devenir des membres à part entière de l’équipe... Souhaitons que ce soit le cas quand la mise au jeu initial sera faite le 13 octobre !
