Last season, the Canadiens’ lost Noah Juulsen off waivers to the Florida Panthers, less than a year later, Bergevin got some sweet revenge by claiming goaltender Samuel Montembeault in the same fashion. Drafted by Florida in 2015, Montembeault has played 25 games in the NHL winning 9, losing 8 and losing 3 in OT/Shootout while having a GAA of 3.20 and a save percentage of .892. Once the Panthers drafted Spencer Knight at the 2019 NHL entry draft, the way to the NHL got more complicated for the Quebecer, and clearly, he was passed over in the depth chart. The Cats decided to stick with 10 million a year man Sergei Bobrovsky and the young Knight to protect their net.
Was he claimed as part of the Habs’ operation to get more French-Canadians in the organization, or is it because Carey Price is likely to be out longer than anticipated? I know, this is just speculation, but with how tight lipped the Habs have always been with the health of the face of the franchise, it’s hard not to speculate. Could also just mean a lack of confidence in the goalies that were in the system such as McNiven and Primeau. Clearly, Primeau is not yet ready for the big times and the organization wants him to have all the time needed to develop properly, and you can’t fault them for that. He’ll spend the year in the AHL and get the lion’s share of the workload. Perhaps, the Habs were just not confident with McNiven backing up Allen if Price is not ready, time will tell as things unfold over the next 10-days.
It’s now been confirmed that Sami Niku will be added to the already very full Canadiens’ injury list. Last night’s questionable hit and ensuing kissing of the boards resulted in a concussion that will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future. After last night’s game, Jan Mysack, Alexandre Fortin and Lukas Vejdemo were cut. Mysak will go back to his OHL team and keep developing while Vejdemo will go through waivers, if he clears, he’ll head to Laval. This morning, Danick Martel and Kevin Poulin were both cut and assigned to the Rocket.
Earlier today, Elise Béliveau was at the Canadiens’ training facility in Brossard to present the Jean Béliveau trophy to Jonathan Drouin for his involvement in the community. It’s nice to see that Mrs. Béliveau is every bit as classy as her husband was and thought it important to go and present it to Drouin in person. There’s no denying that Jonathan Drouin looks like he’s feeling pretty good this preseason and I cannot wait to see how this will translate to the regular season and if it will last.
Finally, the Canadiens will try and make up for last night shameful display by hosting the Senators tonight at the Bell Center. We’ll see Brendan Gallagher in action for the first time this preseason and Cayden Primeau will man the net for the whole game, unless of course the Habs become the Sens whipping boys for a second game in a row. As for Ryan Poehling, he’ll get another go tonight and with better linemates, it’s really time for him to step up unless another season in Laval is what he wants. Tonight’s lines should be as follows:

La saison dernière, les Canadiens ont perdu Noah Juulsen au ballotage après qu’il eut été réclamé par les Panthers, moins d’un an plus tard, Bergevin a obtenu sa revanche en réclamant le gardien Samuel Montembeault de la même façon. Repêché par la Floride en 2015, Montembeault a joué 25 matchs dans la Ligue Nationale conservant une fiche de 9-8-3, une moyenne de buts alloués de 3.20 et un pourcentage d’arrêt de .892. Quand les Panthers ont sélectionné Spencer Knight au repêchage de 2019, la route vers la LNH s’est compliquée pour Montembeault, clairement, ce dernier a perdu des échelons dans la hiérarchie des Panthers et ceux-ci ont décidé d’opter pour l’homme de 10 millions par an et le jeune Knight pour défendre leur cage.
A-t-il été réclamé en raison de la nouvelle tendance du CH d’opter pour plus de Québécois dans l’organisation, ou est-ce que c’est parce que Carey Price risque d’être absent pour plus longtemps que prévu? JE sais, il ne s’agit que de spéculation, mais considérant le fait que l’état de santé du gardien étoile est presque un secret d’état pour le CH, c’est difficile de ne pas spéculer. Ça pourrait également vouloir dire que les gardiens que les Canadiens ont dans leur système ne leurs inspirent pas nécessairement confiance. Clairement, Primeau n’est pas prêt pour la LNH et l’organisation souhaite lui donner tout le temps nécessaire pour se développer, on ne peut pas le leur reprocher. Il passera l’année dans la Ligue Américaine et fera le gros de la besogne. Peut-être que les Habs ne sont pas confortable à l’idée de voir McNiven épauler Allen si Price n’est pas prêt. Le temps nous le dira, il faudra garder un œil sur les développements des 10 prochains jours.
C’est maintenant confirmé, Sami Niku sera ajouté à la déjà très bien garnie liste des blessés du CH. Le coup douteux qu’il a encaissé et l’embrassade de la bande qui en a découlé ont eu pour résultat une commotion qui le gardera sur les lignes de côté pour une certaine période. Après le match d’hier soir, Jan Mysack, Alexandre Fortin et Lukas Vejdemo ont été retranché. Le premier retournera avec son équipe dans la OHL et Vejdemo devra passer au ballotage avant de rejoindre le Rocket. Ce matin, Danick Martel et Kevin Poulin ont également été retranché et assigné au Rocket.
Plus tôt aujourd’hui, madame Élise Béliveau était de passage au complexe d’entraînement du CH pour remettre le trophée Jean Béliveau à Jonathan Drouin pour son implication dans la communauté. C’est bien de voir que madame Béliveau a autant de classe que son mari en avait et qu’elle a trouvé important de se déplacer elle-même pour la remise. On ne peut pas nier que Drouin a vraiment l’air bien depuis le début du camp, et j’ai hâte de voir si cela se poursuivra en saison régulière et si cela durera.
Finalement, les Canadiens tenteront de se reprendre pour leur piètre performance d’hier soir lorsqu’il recevront les Sénateurs au Centre Bell. Nous verrons également Brendan Gallagher en action pour la première fois du camp d’entraînement et Cayden Primeau sera dans le filet pour le match complet. À moins bien sûr que les Canadiens s’avèrent encore une fois être une proie trop facile pour les Sens pour un deuxième match consécutif. Quant à Ryan Poehling, il aura une autre chance ce soir et ce avec de meilleurs compagnons de trio, il est grand temps pour lui de se manifester s’il ne veut pas passer une autre saison à Laval. Les lignes et les duos de ce soir devraient être comme suit:
