Summary - Lucas Raymond looks like the real deal. His play, game after game, just continues to impress. You can read my in game notes below. Essentially, Detroit didn’t start on time. The power play was huge tonight and they climbed back to tie it up in the 3rd. A bad pass by Newpower led to the game winner, and an empty net to close it down.

This team definitely looks different. I don’t think they’re a playoff team, but it’s going to be a much easier watch for good stretches this year. Very impressive stuff happening. I honestly hope Raymond stays up, at least to start the season. All the goals are embedded in the article below.

You can read my Detroit vs Chicago pregame thoughts. Chicago brought some big guy s to Detroit tonight with Kane, Toews and Debrincat all in tow. Newly acquired Seth Jones hit the blue line, and future hall of fame goalie Marc Andre Fleury both joined the road crew as well. Long time “Wing Killer” from Tampa Bay Tyler Johnson opened the scoring on the power play after some impressive puck movement. Early on, it looked like it would be a long night. A second goal by McCabe at 6:19 all but confirmed it. Early in the game, Detroit seems to be supporting my preseason prediction of a missed playoff. Internal improvement is there, but the team has a lot of growing to do.

Chicago got another power play attempt at around 9:00, Detroit doing a better job clearing the puck, but it wasn’t enough. Just as the clock ran out a Chicago rush ended in a 3rd goal being scored. This game seemed completely out of reach with 10 minutes to go in the first. Larkin made an unbelievably bad drop pass right to Kane with Detroit finally on a breakaway. It ended in Detroit icing the puck and Chicago with 3 good attempts off the resulting faceoff. (Faceoffs matter. A lot. Especially in the attacking zones).

Detroit finally got a shot at the man advantage with 6 minutes to go. Some decent looks, and better pressure than last year’s for sure. Fleury just looks like the dominant goalie he can be tonight. 4 shots on the advantage, not bad at all. But, Chicago gets another power play shot at 18:38. Luckily, Detroit survived to the end, still down 3-0.

2nd Period

Detroit managed to kill the rest of the penalty. Around the 4 minute mark, Detroit came out with the man advantage. A faceoff win (see, they matter) with a quick shot by Larkin then saw the puck moved up top to Leddy, who passed to Raymond, who connected with Ryan at the net mouth for a beautiful power play tally. Raymond and Leddy continue to build their points tally in the preseason.

Ryan’s power play goal:

The Wings nearly cashed in again on a pretty play moments later as Zadina gained the zone and set up a nice sequence that saw Fabbri come very close, but no cigar. Unfortunately, at 6:49, Chicago regained the 3 goal lead. Greiss wanted to play the puck, but would have been in the trapezoid. Poor coverage saw Chicago wide open for a one timer.

Suter nearly had a tap in at 8:21, but just couldn’t get a handle. Detroit making better plays in the offensive zone, but Fleury combined with a 3 goal lead may be just too much for them to overcome. Fleury with another incredible save at 8:40. Detroit gets another crack at the power play as Kubalik did a bizarre reverse face wash on the way to the net.

A beautiful slapshot from Seider saw his first of the season, and the team cashed in on the man advantage. Fabbri, to Zadina, to Seider and in. No big celly from the 20 year old, just a fist bump and go.

Seider’s power play goal:

Detroit returns to the power play at 11:12. Seems to have a nice momentum swing as they try to turn this into a 1 goal game. They make it count. The second unit came out after an offside call. Seider with another point dished to Hronek and Hronek to Fabbri. Fabbri cashes in.

Fabbri’s Power Play goal:

Heading into the third, it’s a 1 goal game now. Very different feeling after the Detroit Power Play came alive.

Third Period

Detroit will go to an early power play as Caleb Jones and Dylan Larkin played twister without a board (a penalty in this league). Caleb got the call because he forgot to call out “right foot blue”. The 2nd unit started out, but the top line came in. Soon after, Raymond ripped a beauty after some insanely good passing plays. This kid is something special. Ryan to Larkin, Larkin found the 19 year old open and just a snipe shot.

Raymond power play goal:

The more Raymond plays, the more I want to see him play.

Hawks found the one goal lead again a 10:20 as Newpower caused a 2 on 1 with an ill advised blind pass up the middle. Heart break for the team and a tough lesson to learn. Chicago gaining momentum again as the game heads into the final stretch.

With 2:15 left, Detroit pulled Greiss for the extra attacker. 45 seconds of decent cycle work end with an easy glove save by Fleury. Detroit calls the time out to get a refresh for the top group. Detroit got a more than generous icing call with 1:02 left thanks to Leddy. Raymond with a hard angle shot stopped by Fleury, a scrum ensues. 45 scones left. Hawks get the empty net with 13 seconds left. A tough end to a good game.
