The Nashville Predators announced today that they have re-signed defenseman Mattias Ekholm to a four-year, $25 million contract.

Re-signing Ekholm was one of the major questions facing the Preds entering this season as both he and winger Filip Forsberg would be unrestricted free agents at the end of the year.

Ekholm has provided great value for the Preds, but he is already 31 years old. He is a solid player, but the term on this could be of concern. However, as it currently stands, Ekholm’s play has not diminished in the slightest, so I’ll take the risk of his decline in the coming years. As it currently stands, I like the signing. We can always come back to this moment in a few years and say it was bad but that’s always the easy thing to do. I’ll stick with my gut and say this was wise and a good deal for both sides.

And with Ekholm been taken care of, the question still remains on Forsberg. It has been rumored negotiations have been little to nonexistent.

Hockey is back with excellent games last night, and I love ESPN being back in the game. One more day until Opening Night in Tennessee! Get ready!
