Ilya Sorokin and the The New York Islanders picked up back-to-back shutouts wins over the last two nights, defeating the Arizona Coyotes 3-0 on Saturday, then earning a 2-0 win against the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday.
Against the Coyotes, the Islanders didn’t generate a ton of chances but in turn, also allowed very few opportunities. It was potentially the first game where the Islanders looked like themselves, really giving their opponent nothing to work with. Yes, the Islanders' lack of scoring, and at times, offense in general has been somewhat concerning. That said, we know this isn’t a team that’s going to score a ton of goals and it isn’t news to anyone that they could really use another top forward or two. Plus, they capitalized on their chances and got the win, which is what matters.
Last night, Sorokin did have to be very sharp against Vegas but while the Islanders were outshot pretty badly, once again, they didn’t surrender a ton of quality chances. New York did a good job clogging up the middle of the defensive zone, and going the other way, the Islanders also generated more quality chances than they had against Arizona. If it hadn’t been for Robin Lehner making some pretty great saves, the Islanders could have cashed in on a few more chances. Specifically, I think Brock Nelson has been looking a lot better over the last couple of games.
The headline here though is how well the Islanders were able to shut down quality chances against both the Coyotes and Golden Knights. They looked a lot more like they have over the past few seasons and hopefully, this is a return to form.
Obviously, back-to-back shutouts for Sorokin is great to see as well. He came up with key saves when he needed to and stopped all 68 shots he faced over the two games, with 42 of those coming against Vegas.
The Islanders will now be off until Saturday, when they play in Nashville.
