The day has arrived for us wax ripping coffee addicts who appreciate a good “bang for the buck”: Upper Deck’s annual Tim Horton’s set is on the market!
The 21-22 set drops today, mixing old and new for what is hopefully another solid release. Sold exclusively at Tim Horton’s locations in Canada, the price point continues to be locked in at 0.99 cents a pack per drink, $1.99 otherwise, making this a real attainable product for the hosers amongst us (sorry American fam!). Above the pricing, a base card checklist of 125 (with Tim Horton again locking down card #1 position) makes the set an attainable chase with a good balance of challenge. Each pack contains three cards, typically consisting of two base and one insert.
Base cards aside, however, what has historically been the shine on this release is that the insert subsets have always hit higher than the price per pack would suggest. This was evident in the inaugural 2015-16 set with the presence of quality die-cut, foil stamped, acetate, and stereo graphics pulls on the regular, which continue to hold decent aftermarket values from the under-$10 to $50-$60 ranges. So if you’ve never chased this set before because you’ve equated price point for value, it may be worthwhile reconsidering that stance! This year should prove no different! The red parallel set (return from last year; 50 cards), Gold Etching (return from last year; 15 cards), Superstar Showcase (returning from the 18-19 release;15 cards) and Canvas subsets (return from last year; 15 cards) make a return, while the ever popular, and most difficult sub-set to complete, lenticular “3D” cards are also back, albeit under the “Hockey Heroes” name (20 cards) and a return to featuring a single player (last seen in the 18-19 release). New additions include the eye-poppingly bright ProMotion set (15 cards) and Photo Finish checklist set which round out the selections nicely.
Were this not enough, consider some of the other potential pulls: One of 1,500 Wayne Gretzky Tribute cards, a 2021 Draft Pick (1,200), McKinnon (100) and Crosby (87) autographs, and signature/autograph redemptions (approx. 12,700 cards). A 0.99 cent pack with a chance at hitting some great inserts and memorabilia is a no brainer for me!
Grabbed my first few packs today and they look great! Of my initial nine packs, seven had non-checklist inserts with solid players (Matthews, McDavid, Panarin, Hughes, Bergeron) that would easily see the price of the packs coming back with some to spare. While I was a bit skeptical on the rainbow vomit design of the Canvas cards, they look decent when it’s in front of you (albeit still preferring the previous design). As for the ProMotion release: they look fantastic! While super bright, it works in a way that doesn’t overwhelm. It also provides an alternating smooth player surface with varying textured sweeps across the individual beams of the background that allow for depth and pop in a unique manner.
Great set, awesome price point, fun chase! Have at it and enjoy my friends!
Positive vibes to you all. Please put some care into you and yours this beautiful day and look out for one another where possible! Our impact on others with even the smallest of actions, is far greater than we tend to realize. My best your way…
