Summary - just sitting back and enjoying the game tonight was a nice change of pace. My wife jokes that my typing sounds like Morse code or a wood pecker. I take notes in real time via my keyboard. But tonight I just soaked it in. I only took notes on Red Wing goals scored to highlight the embed.
When Erne got his assist (after scoring his 2nd of the season) it was more and more clear that there is a field promotion in process. Zadina is having a tough start. The goals Detroit needed tonight were of the “ugly” variety (though with some pretty plays). Hronek had to get into the blue to get a pass through for the first. The second required multiple rebounds. Erne has no trouble getting into the paint or crashing the net. Zadina is still looking for his shot, sometimes you just have to get in there and let them bounce off of you.
The Overtime goal had something in common with Raymond’s hat trick goal. Seider, Raymond and Larkin. Last year’s “untouchables” from the trade deadline. The only untouchables that were mentioned. Pretty exciting.
I thought Detroit played a very good first. The second period started a little rough, but the modified second line of Erne/Fabbri/Suter got things headed in the right direction. The second line clicked with Zadina and Erne being swapped, and was able to get in tight a muck it up. This was a game where you needed plays in tight, but in Overtime it was about skill and a snipe. Very nice.
Hronek, to his credit, looked to be engaged and wanted to regain some footing. Greiss had some fantastic saves, including the first save on Ovechkin before he scored on his own rebound.
Goals:
2nd period:
Erne with a quick shot as Hronek makes a really nice play to get the puck through the blue paint and into high danger territory. Nice work down low by the Dman.
Erne’s goal:
Third Period:
Erne factored into the scoring agin as Suter got him the puck, Erne did a quick spin around shot and Fabbri knocked in the rebound. 3 shots on net (starting with Stecher) in quick succession. Very nice work by that adjusted second line (Erne was in for Zadina).
Fabbri tying goal:
Overtime:
Raymond fought off some checking in impressive fashion as he retreated to his own zone and fought held his own on Kuznetsov before breaking out. A pass to the captain and a rip to the top corner ended this one. It was the same three players that figured in on Raymond’s Hat Trick goal. The “untouchables” from last year’s trade deadline with Seider, Raymond and Larkin together.
Larkin’s OT winner:
