Previous post: Seider gets rookie of the month, Montreal pregame

I stopped taking notes early on. This was a rough one to watch. I think it’s a reminder of how big the gap from the top line down really is on this Detroit team. Larkin does so much to put the team on his back. Bertuzzi is a powder keg (it’s like part of Tatar is still with us sometimes). Detroit really needs another top 6 center.

Ned, God bless you sir. It was raining pucks (hallelujah) and you gave the team a chance. Montreal just outplayed Detroit. If you didn’t know how many players Montreal was missing and how tough their year has been (Drouin got a scary hit tonight) you would just see them as the better team. Outshooting Detroit nearly 2 to 1, plenty of good scoring chances and the skaters looked confident.

The intangibles in hockey, to me, are goalies and momentum. Montreal had strong doses of both tonight. From the first 2 shifts of pinning Detroit in their own zone, the Habs controlled the game. A team with some of the most passionate fans in the league comes to life when things start to go right after long stretches of rough results.

More than anything, I’m just shrugging after this one. Detroit was outplayed. They got good enough goaltending but were unable to find their game. If Yzerman went out and got a center this year, I wouldn’t mind at all.

Congrats to the Habs. They played. They competed. They cared a lot about getting this one. Yes, Detroit is down 2 important players but if that’s all it takes for the team to fall apart, there aren’t enough important players yet.

Hopefully, Larkin is ok. It would be a boost to get he and Bertuzzi back in Boston. I’m sure the locker room will be fairly quiet after this one.

First Period:

Two solid minutes hemmed in the Montreal zone saw Detroit give up a goal early. Montreal with 5 shots in that time. Veleno line gets O zone faceoff after icing, lose faceoff, fail to get a shot, Montreal controls. 4th line gets first shot of the game for Detroit with 16:20 left. Raymond with a nice attempt at around 4:30. Finally some cycle time.

About 8 minutes in, Veleno stick breaks. Leaves to get a new one while Montreal is on the attack. Grade a chance by Habs. JV can’t make that play. Habs end up coming back and scoring about 1:18 later. Wings just drowning. Confusion on Seider/Dekeyser missed assignment on that goal.
