The Anaheim Ducks picked up their second win in a row last night, defeating the New Jersey Devils 4-0.
The story of the game was the special teams battle. The Devils had five power plays, while the Ducks had seven, and under 40 minutes of the game was played at even strength. This proved to work in the Ducks’ favour.
The Ducks went 2-for-7 seven with the man advantage while killing off all five penalties and scoring a shorthanded goal in the process. It’s great to see, considering the Ducks had the league’s worst power play last year, operating at an absurdly low 8.9 per cent.
Another great sign is that Anaheim hasn’t had a problem finding the back of the net early on. The Ducks have scored at least three goals in each of their last six games. Among other players, a key reason for their offensive success has been the connection between Ryan Getzlaf and Troy Terry.
Both forwards are off to extremely impressive starts, with Terry scoring seven goals and 12 points in 10 games and currently riding a nine-game point streak, while Getzlaf has nine assists and 10 points in 11 games. The key note on this: of Terry’s seven goals this season, Getzlaf has assisted on six of them.
The two players are clearly clicking and that was obvious again last night. On Terry’s first goal, which came on the power play, Getzlaf made an excellent move to fake a shot and feed a great pass right to Terry, who finished it off.
Then later, Getzlaf chipped the puck up to Terry for an odd-man rush, with Terry picking his spot with a great shot for his second of the game.
This isn’t meant to neglect the strong play of Isac Lundestrom, Adam Henrique, Cam Fowler, Jakob Silfverberg (before he entered COVID protocol), or Kevin Shattenkirk’s offensive output. But the connection between Getzlaf and Terry has been a key part of the team’s success so far.
The Ducks have looked better and better since the start of the season and with their next game coming against the winless Arizona Coyotes at home on Friday, Anaheim will have a chance to surpass a .500 points percentage.
