The young Columbus Blue Jackets found the way to hold on and upset the injury filled Colorado Avalanche in overtime last night. The final score was 5-4, improving their record to 6-3-0 through the first nine games.

After a scoreless first period, all the goals were scored from the early stages of the second period until the first 75 seconds into the extra time slot.

Colorado broke the ice with the first two goals of the game. First, 30 seconds in, came from winger Logan O’Connor. Nazem Kadri had the lone assist on the play.

Kadri helped chip in on the second goal with supporting defender Bowen Byram on a full end to end rush, setting him up with his second of the season. Captain Gabriel Landeskog had the secondary helper.

Columbus got their late in the second, off of defenseman Jake Bean, with his second as a Blue Jacket. Oliver Bjorkstrand and Andrew Peeke had the assists.

Cole Sillinger evened the game in the third period with his second career goal. Jakub Voracek and Patrik Laine had the helpers. Silly added the go-ahead for his second of the game and third of the season off a tip-in goal. Gabriel Carlsson got his first point of the year, and Laine added to his production.

Captain Boone Jenner tallied the final regulation goal for Columbus, making it the fourth straight goal in the game. Jenner’s team leading 6th goal of the season. Gustav Nyqvist and Bjorkstrand had the supporter points.

JT Compher contributed with his 5 goal of the campaign to end the Columbus scoring streak. Byram and Kadri had the helpers. Byram evened the scoring with his third of the season and second of the game; Nathan MacKinnon and Landeskog had the assists.

Jake Bean knotted the overtime winner just a minute into the extra time with his second of the game and third of the season. Voracek and Sillinger had the assists.

Jonas Johansson stopped 31 of 36 shots for a 0.865 save percentage on the evening.

Joonas Korpisalo saved 28 of 32 shots for a 0.875 save percentage.

Nathan MacKinnon was my player to watch for the Avalanche. He did have a point; but that is all he was limited to against Columbus last night. He was a +1 in 23 and a half minutes of ice time.

Oliver Bjorkstrand was my player to watch for the Jackets. The leading point scorer did just that last night. Score. He was two points, but was a -1. He also registered 3 shots on goal in 20 minutes of time on ice.

CBJ Three Stars of the Game

1. Jake Bean— 2 goals (GWG) [3]

2. Cole Sillinger— 2 goals (3)

3. Oliver Bjorkstrand— 2 assists (8)
