Bertuzzi, Suter and Raymond come up big, Seider gets OT winner
Summary - big boost as Larkin made his way back into the lineup. Was concerned that the swap of Suter to the second line would hinder him, but he seems to have found some confidence. He tallied off of a rebound from a Hronek shot and ended up getting the game winner as well as 1st star of the game.
The game started out with a reversal in fortune from the Buffalo game. VGK scores early to get a 1-0 lead. The power plays end up being the difference in a good way tonight. Raymond notched his 6th and tied Bertuzzi for goals. That wouldn’t last through the game as Bert got an empty net for his 7th. Raymond scoring at a point per game clip.
Greiss stood tall as Detroit was outshot 40-30. Vegas took over for the last 6 or 7 minutes. The Wings weathered the storm. I am concerned about Seider. He looked to “tweak” something after a trip. Hopefully the impressive rookie can shake it off. He had some plays tonight that just continue to impress.
All of a sudden, Detroit looked like a team with a second line. Fabbri and Suter played really hard. Zadina will eventually start cashing in on some of the opportunities he’s creating. Namestnikov is 3rd in team goals with 5, and that’s a nice boost as well.
The team found some confidence in Buffalo and it carried over. Even though Vegas took over at the very end, Detroit had some really nice shifts and cashed in scoring 5. Edmonton is up next, and Seider will get his first blue line look at McDavid and Draisaitl as opponents.
First Period:
Wings get a power play chance around the 8 minute mark. A nice passing play between Zadina, Bertuzzi and Raymond ends up the net. That right shot on the left side is something that makes a big difference. A big keep in by Seider helped set up the play. Unit moving well. Raymond gets his 14th point in his 13th game with 6 goals and 8 assists. Now tied for team lead in goals.
Raymond’s goal:
Just about a minute after they scored on the power play, Detroit right back to the man advantage. The second unit strikes this time. Hronek wrangles the puck at the point, gets it to Suter who sends it to Fabbri. Fabbri with a nice snapshot from near the blue line scores.
Fabbri goal:
With 1:32 left, a very smart neutral zone play by Leddy with a bounce pass Hronek ends up on Suter’s stick. He goes bar down for a beauty. The past 2 games he looks like a new man.
Suter’s goal:
Detroit ends up being outshot 13 to 7 but lead the game 3-1.
Second period:
Depth scoring kicks in as Namestnikov shot far side after some nice behind the net handling by Stephens. Everyone seems to have some jump to night. That’s Namestnikov’s 5th on the season, Gagner gets the 2nd assist.
Namestnikov goal:
Third Period:
Fabbri draws a penalty at 8:34. PP unable to convert.
Rasmussen craws a penalty, power play commences w 7:32 left. Seider got dinged up on a trip during the delayed play. Failed to convert, 2nd unit stayed on for the entire penalty. Poor decision making by Hronek saw Wings pushed back into their own zone and hemmed in. Leddy with a 3:00 shift after 2 icings. Finally got out, but another icing has Wings back in their own zone with some tired forwards.
Vegas pulled their goalie with 4:06 left. Wings in trouble as they lose the faceoff. Hemmed in. Larkin ices the puck again, 3:36 left. Some tired skaters out there.
Another faceoff loss leads to good looks by VGK. Greiss freezes the puck, 3:23 left. Commercial break so Detroit can get some fresh skaters. Wings able to skate the puck out, but Smith comes back on a breakaway. Greiss has to make a timely save. Faceoff in Detroit zone with 2:59 left.
VGK wins the faceoff, gets a shot on net. 2:47 left. Wings end up icing the puck after the resulting faceoff, 2:37 left. Larkin able to tip puck out, Vegas back with numbers. Greiss holds for a faceoff. Dekeyser saves a goal with 1:58 left. Vegas controls again after faceoff. Wings ice the puck again with 1:38 left. VGK now outshooting Detroit 39-29.
Wings able to clear with 52 seconds left. VGK back in, Wings get it back out, Dadonov stops an empty net attempt by Suter. 30 seconds left and Wings are hemmed in.
Wings get the puck out, and with 10.5 seconds left, Bertuzzi scores into the empty net. 5-2 Wings. Looks to be unassisted as Bert battled Marchessault for the puck in the neutral zone and scores with it.
Bertuzzi’s empty net goal.
