After a 4-0 start to the season, the San Jose Sharks have cooled off to an extent, picking up three wins in their last nine games.

A contributing factor in this has been the fact that they’ve been without many players due to COVID protocol. Head coach Bob Boughner, as well as Erik Karlsson, Kevin Labanc, Timo Meier and Marc-Edouard Vlasic (among others) have all missed several games, which didn't help the Sharks’ chances.

San Jose squandered an opportunity to pick up more points on a five-game homestand but again, some of that can maybe be chalked up to the absences. Despite that, San Jose did manage to get wins over the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres, as well as a road win over the Calgary Flames.

Now with the team getting players back from COVID protocol, we’ll get to see how competitive this team really is. Logan Couture and Jonathan Dahlen have been great up front early on and Brent Burns has had to take on an even larger role on the blue line. James Reimer has also managed an outstanding .940 save percentage and could start to position himself in more of a starting role for the team. However, adding key players back into the mix is key for the Sharks, especially over the next week.

The Sharks will face some tough competition on the road over the next while, taking on the Colorado Avalanche tonight, followed by the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday and the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. Even once back home, they’ll face two of the strongest teams in the Metropolitan Division, being the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.

It’ll be a tough test for the Sharks but with players getting back into the lineup, now’s the time where we’ll see where they stand against tough competition.
