After nine straight wins to start the season, the Hurricanes have won two of their last four games and are now facing a tough task, as they begin a six-game road trip tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Offense was a key part of the team’s success through their winning streak to open the season. However, the Hurricanes have been limited to just eight goals over their past four games.

Over the last six games, Sebastian Aho has a goal and four points, while Vincent Trocheck has a goal and three points and Teuvo Teravainen has just a goal and one assist in that stretch. Jordan Staal has also had a tough time getting on the scoresheet, with just a single assist in those six games, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi has possibly been in a worse slump than any other forward during that span of games, going without a point and registering just two shots on goal. Contributions from the defense group have slowed down as well and it doesn’t help that Martin Necas has been out for two of those games, but the issue still needs to be resolved.

That said, the team’s power play actually hasn’t been a problem and in fact, it’s been a key source of their offense recently. The Hurricanes have scored just nine goals at even strength over their last six games and their power play has been quite the help.

We can feel confident that the lack of scoring isn’t going to be an issue that continues for an extended period. The Hurricanes have still managed 198 shots over the last six games and the major issue is that their shooting percentage of just seven per cent is unsustainably low.

While the Hurricanes continue to do a great job preventing goals, they’ll need to find a way to get back on track offensively, heading into a long road trip.
