Game 14 Preview: Flyers vs. Flames

Alain Vigneault's Philadelphia Flyers (7-4-2) open a three-game homestand on Wednesday when they take on Darryl Sutter's Calgary Flames (8-3-4) at the Wells Fargo. Game time is 7:00 p.m. ET (NBCSP, 93.3 WMMR).

Wednesday is also Flyers Hall of Fame induction night for Paul Holmgren and Rick Tocchet. The induction ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. ET. Fans attending the game should plan to arrive early.

This is the second and final meeting of the season between the Flyers and Flames. On Oct. 30 in Calgary, the Flames skated to a 4-0 shutout victory.

The Flyers enter this game coming off a 5-2 loss in Dallas on Saturday evening. Philadelphia controlled the first period but could not solve Anton Khudobin despite 19 shots on goal and an 11-7 scoring chance edge. Leading 1-0 entering the second period, Dallas took over the game and didn't look back. Martin Jones, as with Hart in the last Calgary game, had little to no chance to stop any of the four pucks that found the net on 29 shots. Dallas' final goal was an empty netter. James van Riemsdyk (2nd goal of the season, 1st goal at five-on-five) and Ivan Provorov (PPG, 1st) scored in a losing cause.

The Flames, who've played nine of their first 15 games this season on the road, will play their fourth tilt of a seven-game road trip. The team is 6-2-1 overall in away games to date.

Carter Hart will get the start in goal for the Flyers. Ryan Ellis reaggravated the lower-body issue that has plagued him since the final game of training camp and is once again sidelined for a significant amount of time. He's officially week-to-week. Nick Seeler will be recalled again. Oskar Lindblom will be a healthy scratch for this game, per Vigneault. Patrick Brown will be in the lineup.

The Flames did not practice on Monday. Jacob Markström, who breezed to a 20-save shutout performance against the Flyers in Calgary, is the expected starting goalie. The Flyers' projected lines are below. The Flames' lines, if available, will be posted prior to game time.

For an in-depth five-point preview discussing the Flyers' second-period issues this season, the need for Sean Couturier's line to have a step-up game against Calgary and the factors that make Calgary one of the harder opponents leaguewide but a potentially vulnerable team in this game. see the "Five Things" feature on the Flyers' website. It should be posted around 10 a.m. ET.

Team Holmgren Nips Team Tocchet, 6-5

In front of a crowd of 5,000-plus at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday evening, Team Holmgren narrowly defeated Team Tocchet, 6-5, at the Flyers Alumni Hall of Fame game. All proceeds from the game went to Flyers Charities and the charity programs run by the Flyers Alumni Association ("Every Child Deserves a Bike", "12 Days of Christmas Giving").

In NHL Alumni games, it's almost always the skaters with the younger legs that stand out the most. That was the case again on Monday with Scottie Upshall recording a hat trick and an assist for Team Holmgren with Joffrey Lupul notching a goal and three assist.

The game came down to a penalty shot for Team Tocchet's Danny Briere in the final minute. Briere lost the puck trying to make one final cut to the right to tuck the puck inside the post. Goaltending chores were split for Team Holmgren between Robert Esche and Neil Little, while Mike McKenna and, over the latter portion of the third period, Flyers Warriors goalie Bill Duffy were in net for Team Tocchet.

The prettiest goals of the nights were scored by Team Tocchet's Simon Gagne. Both came on 2-on-1 rushes with Briere. On the first, Gagne pulled off his patented move to the backhand and scored. On the latter, he had a tap-in at the left post after a tape-to-tape pass from Briere.

There was a scary moment in the second period of the game when Team Holmgren defenseman Kjell Samuelsson deflected a pass and ramped up off his stick to strike Team Tocchet's Mike Knuble in the face. Knuble bled but didn't require stitches (a little glue did the trick). Being a hockey player, Knuble returned for the third period.
