Well, another game, another loss for the Ottawa Senators as they fell today 4-0 to the Anaheim Ducks. Ottawa has now lost 9 of their last 10 games and the frustration from all the losing really showed today as Ottawa really didn't play in 5 man units as they did in the previous 2 games on the road. It doesn't get any easier as the LA Kings sat rested today while Ottawa played in Anaheim. Tomorrow will be the Sens 4th game in 6 nights on the road and they have less than 24 hours to find their legs! Ottawa outshot, outhit, and even won the faceoff battle for once on the road but when the majority of your chances are from the perimeter, you aren't going to win games like that.
The Sens made Stolarz look like Vasilevsky today, he made 34 saves but outside of some solid 2nd period chances by Ottawa, he truly wasn't tested. Sens GM Pierre Dorion really needs to make a move to help this team now at the forward position. This team has zero confidence and I'm not sure it will matter who you start in goal at this point. Sure the Sens get Drake Batherson back upon the end of the road trip but one player isn't going to fix this team's problems. The biggest problem is the opposition is neutralizing the top line due to NO DEPTH up front. Tkachuk/Norris/Sanford were each a -2! If you look at the Ducks box score, you see the balance through all 4 lines and all 3 defense pairings. TOI is distributed very well and it allowed the Ducks to neutralize the Sens top two lines, very easily. Nick Paul is more suited in a 3rd line role and is struggling with the oppositions match ups.
The 3rd defense pairing of Mete/Zaitsev was each a -2 as well. DJ Smith really tried to shake it up in the 3rd period where he had Tierney centering Tkachuk and Formenton. Parker Kelly really seems like he isn't ready for the NHL, for the 2nd game in a row, he had no idea who his assignment was and allowed the Ducks forwards to have clean looks leading to goals. He did the same thing in Colorado in allowing the Avs the game-winner too, I truly don't understand why he's up here. Let him progress down in Belleville.
On a positive note, Stutzle had another strong game and was noticeable all game long. Lassi Thomson continues to progress nicely as he plays with no fear and has been a nice addition on the 2nd PP unit getting pucks to the net.
One has to assume that Filip Gustavsson will start in goal in LA tomorrow. Gametime is 7pm EST on Sportsnet One. I wonder if MDZ will draw into the line up for Mete? I can't see Parker Kelly being kept in the lineup, with Logan Shaw rested and ready to go.
When looking at this current Sens lineup, who do you think should either be waived by Dorion or sent down to Belleville?
Thanks for reading.
