The NHL announced that at least two of the New York Islanders' upcoming games have been postponed, as a result of COVID-19 concerns.
The two games were set to take place on Sunday and Tuesday, on the road against the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers respectively. Kieffer Bellows, Zdeno Chara, Casey Cizikas, Andy Greene, Ross Johnston, Anders Lee and Adam Pelech all remain in COVID protocol for the Islanders.
The Islanders have been dealing with a depleted roster for several games now and there’s certainly an argument to be made that games should’ve been postponed sooner.
They’re currently riding an eight-game losing streak and lost their first four games at UBS Arena, falling to the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins. They’ve scored just five goals in their last seven games and now sit with a terrible 5-10-2 record overall this season.
The Islanders have been without key players for a sizeable portion of their losing streak, both to COVID protocols and injuries. But they now find themselves in a pretty rough spot, at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division standings. Pretty much every single forward has underperformed and defensively, the team had been inconsistent even before a lot of the absences.
As of now, their next game is scheduled for Thursday. With their next four games coming against the San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators, the Islanders will need to find a way to get back on track, hopefully with some players back in the lineup.
