Summary:
26 seconds of overtime saw Detroit benefit from a hard fought game. Buffalo was shelled 40 shots to 28 but Tokarski had a big night. A very late tip in by Skinner kept the Sabres alive.
Detroit played a very strong game, and the score could have been much more lopsided. Raymond’s post game interview was a bit baffling. He admitted that he couldn’t really “see the goal” but used the defenseman as a screen and ripped it. Those are fairly impressive instincts.
Bertuzzi is facing O.K. Corral syndrome. He’s hit a dry spell and he’s trying to shoot his way out. An impressive 8 shots on net (plus one off the pipe) show that the gritty winger is working his way back to the scoresheet.
Nice to see Suter rewarded with a goal. He’s worked really hard in the first quarter and become a strong defensive player. I’m more impressed with him as the season goes on. He’s working and it’s paying off.
Zadina’s demotion and Smith being brought up for some 2nd line time is one of those head shakers. Blashill still has those bizarre notions on how to “get players going”. I like Smith, but shift by shift I don’t think he deserves a higher spot than Zadina on the roster.
The rookies are punishing the Sabres with OT goals from Seider and now Raymond. It’s good to see the kids having success. They are a breath of fresh air.
Update on me:
Same story tonight. Had to turn off volume, had to keep eyes off the screen for far too much time (and rewind to stay posted). I don’t think it’s getting better, and if I can’t watch the games this is a brutal way to function. You all deserve to have someone who is hanging on every second and able to break it down better than what I’m doing right now. I’ll continue to look in the mirror and see if I can truly deliver what you all should expect from a hockey blog.
Red Wings’ First Period goals:
No first period goals
Red Wings’ Second Period goals:
After Detroit seemed to carry the play, Cozens made the games opening tally after a save in the Buffalo end went 200 ft the other way. At 9:56, Zadina found the back of the net for his 4th of the season on a scramble that looked like it could have been challenged. Goal was changed to Rowney, Zadina didn’t get a stick on it, Rowney tapped it in for his 2nd. Zadina’s efforts just not paying off in the goal department but I do think he’ll be rewarded as the season goes on.
Rowney’s 2nd of the season:
Just about 1:20 later, Suter whacked a puck 5 hole after it was initially stopped by Tokarski. Suter’s 5th of the year also looked like it may be challenged but was allowed to stand.
Suter’s 5th of the season:
Red Wings’ Third Period goals:
None
Overtime:
26 seconds. Larkin wins a faceoff, Hronek grabs the puck. Hronek passes to Larkin, Larkin passes to Raymond who skates around 150 feet and buries the shot for his 9th. Both rookies had points again tonight. Raymond just looks like an unbelievable pickup as the 19 year old is part of another game winner:
