The World Junior Hockey Championship started today, with six Los Angeles Kings prospects participating in the tournament.
Samuel Helenius and Kasper Simontaival will be part of Team Finland, while Kirill Kirsanov will represent Russia, Martin Chromiak will suit up for Slovakia, Helge Grans will be on Team Sweden and Brock Faber will represent the United States.
Helenius (F) was drafted 59th overall by the Kings in this year’s NHL Draft. He’s scored a goal and six points in Finland’s top professional league this year and was a member of Team Finland last year as well, registering two goals and four points in seven games.
Simontaival (F) was selected by the Kings with the 66th pick in 2020. This year, Simontaival has three goals and six points in 15 games while playing in Finland’s top league. He also participated in last year’s tournament, scoring an impressive four goals and seven points in seven games.
Kirsanov (D) was selected by the Kings with the 84th pick in this year’s NHL Draft. The defender has four points in 24 KHL games this year and also represented Russia in the tournament last year, registering a goal and an assist in seven games.
Chromiak (F) was taken by the Kings in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He’s scored an impressive 13 goals and 32 points in 23 games with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs this season and also played for Slovakia in last year's tournament, scoring one goal in five games.
Grans (D) was selected 35th overall by the Kings in 2020. He’s scored three goals and eight points in 16 AHL games with the Ontario Reign and this will be his first time participating in the tournament.
Faber (D) was drafted by the Kings with the 45th pick in last year’s draft. He’s scored two goals and nine points in 18 games with the University of Minnesota and this will be his second time participating in the tournament, after managing five points in seven games during last year’s tournament.
In other news, the NHL postponed all games before December 28 and as a result, the Kings’ game originally scheduled for tomorrow against the Arizona Coyotes has been pushed back.
Los Angeles’ next game will now come on Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
