Avalanche Fall Down Big; Rally To Shock Leafs

The Colorado Avalanche can do no wrong. Even when it looks like it's not going to be their night they somehow find a way to make it their night.

Devon Toews scored just over a minute into overtime to complete an improbable comeback for the 'Avs. Colorado rallied from two three-goal deficits to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 at Ball Arena for a franchise-record 11th consecutive home victory.

The record-breaking victory wouldn't come easy. Colorado found itself down 3-0 three-quarters of a way through the first period and 4-1 nearly halfway through the game, but there is magic in that Colorado air.

Cale Makar danced his way around the offensive zone for his 15th goal of the season to cut the deficit to 4-2. The miraculous Makar became the first defenseman in nearly 20 years to score 15 goals in his first 27 games.

Nathan MacKinnon scored midway through the third period to make it 4-3 and extend the NHL's longest active point streak to 13 games.

J.T. Compher buried a perfect feed blind pass from behind Leafs' goalie Jack Campbell to tie the game at 4-4 and Toews completed the comeback with another tremendous individual effort from an 'Avs defenseman in OT.

All in all, it was an improbable comeback, but nothing is out of the realm of possibility with this team. Nothing can stop this team right now. This group is special folks.

Colorado remains a scoring machine too - which is fun. They've scored four or more goals in 11 of the last 12 games going 10-1-1 during this stretch.

Other news and notes:

- Darcy Kuemper was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on eight shots. Pavel Francouz came in and made19 saves in relief for the win.

- Makar leads all defensemen in goals scored this season. *cough* Norris *cough*

- Colorado improved to 21-8-2. Their .710 winning percentage is the best in the Western Conference. Only Carolina (.758), Florida (.729), and Toronto (.712) are better in the NHL.

- The 'Avs are averaging 4.36 goals per game nearly halfway through the season. Keep that in mind if they keep this goal pace up. We are in historic territory.

Colorado's next game is Monday night. They'll look to stretch the home win streak to a dozen games when they host the Seattle Kraken.
