The San Jose Sharks fell 3-0 to the New York Rangers last night, marking the end of their three-game winning streak.

The Sharks had a decent opening period, outshooting the Rangers 10-6 and generating some good chances. However, they gave up a shorthanded goal partway through the frame, as Jonathan Dahlen decided to try to pressure the puck carrier on a rush instead of just taking the pass option, resulting in Chris Kreider scoring off a pass from Mika Zibanejad. As a result, the Rangers took the lead into the intermission.

In the second period, the teams traded some great chances, with rushes going both ways. The Sharks had a breakaway and some sustained pressure, but neither team was able to convert and it remained a 1-0 game after 40 minutes.

New York extended their lead early in the third period, as the Sharks couldn’t get the puck out of their end and Ryan Strome got the puck back to Braden Schneider, who picked a corner for his first goal in his first NHL game. The Sharks continued to press to try to climb back into the game after that, firing 17 shots at Igor Shesterkin in the period and generating multiple quality chances off the rush. However, Kreider sealed the deal with his second goal of the game, sliding the puck into the empty net.

Overall, this was far from a poor game for the Sharks. They put 37 shots on Shesterkin and certainly had their chances - realistically, San Jose ran up against one of the best goalies in the league. They were getting more chances than they were giving up and there are positives coming from this game. That said, shorthanded goals always hurt.

Adin Hill also continues to be very good since returning for the Sharks. Over his last four starts, Hill has allowed just eight goals on 119 shots, posting a .933 save percentage.

Also, both Rudolfs Balcers and Nick Bonino returned to the lineup, which was good to see.

The Sharks’ next game comes tomorrow night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
