The Los Angeles Kings fell 6-2 to the San Jose Sharks today, marking the end of their four-game winning streak.

The Sharks opened the scoring three minutes into the game on a power play, as Timo Meier took a pass from Brent Burns and beat Jonathan Quick, who couldn’t get over in time. The Kings generated a lot of shots throughout the frame, but Rudolfs Balcers ended up extending San Jose’s lead later in the period, getting the puck in front and firing a puck past Quick. Then after that, Meier put the Sharks up 3-0, as he got to a rebound, spun, and fired a shot past Quick.

Meier then picked up his hat trick goal just 21 seconds later after a pass from Tomas Hertl, making it 4-0 Sharks. Despite Anze Kopitar getting Los Angeles on the board right before the end of the frame, the Kings found themselves down 4-1 after the period, despite outshooting the Sharks 15-8.

The problems continued in the second frame, as Meier netted his fourth goal of the game on a power play just a minute into the period. Despite Los Angeles outshooting the Sharks once again, this time by a massive 15-4 margin in the frame, Meier scored his fifth goal just before the end of the second period, on a nice play to toe-drag around Drew Doughty and beat Quick.

The Kings did get one back in the third period, as Drew Doughty put a pass to Mikey Anderson in front, who directed the puck past James Reimer. However, San Jose held on for a 6-2 win, with Timo Meier breaking the Sharks' record for most goals in a single game.

This was a bit of an odd game for the Kings, in the sense that they controlled a lot of the play and outshot the Sharks by a 41-17 margin. Essentially, aside from giving up four goals in a span of about five minutes between the end of the first period and beginning of the second period, they played a good game.

That said, it’s not like Jonathan Quick is really to blame, as most of the goals came on high-danger chances. The Kings did lose battles for loose pucks around the net and had some positioning issues.

Overall though, the score doesn’t reflect how the game went. Hopefully this is one the Kings can shake off and manage to get their momentum back, as they’re back in action tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
