Wrap: Islanders Prevail over Flyers in Shootout, 4-3 (1-0)
The Philadelphia Flyers saw their winless streak grow to nine games after a 4-3 (1-0) defeat via a nine-round shootout at the hands of New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday. The Flyers are 0-6-3 in that span.
The Flyers battled back from deficits of 1-0 (1st period) and 2-1 (2nd period) to take the game to the third period tied at 2-2. On this night, the Flyers had decidedly the better of the territorial play and scoring chances through the first two periods as well as the early portion of the third. Philly took a 3-2 lead in the third period but couldn't protect or add to it.
The Flyers had a quick start to overtime, but the Islanders eventually got six of the 3-on-3 sudden death frame's combined eight shots. The goalies owned the skills competition before Oliver Wahlstrom ended it in the bottom of the ninth round.
Philadelphia fell to 0-4 in shootouts this season; 53-96 all-time. The Flyers have gone 0-for-16 on shootout attempts this season (plus 0-for-2 on penalty shot opportunities). On this night a single shootout goal would have sufficed.
The Flyers exited thois game with a 2-16-3 record when trailing first in a game. Battling back hasn't been an issue over the past week -- Philly has erased deficits in three of the last four games -- but haven't won a third period on the scoreboard with these games on the line.
Robin Salo (1st career NHL goal) gave the Islanders an early 1-0 lead in the first period. After a would-be Joel Farabee goal was wiped out on an offside challenge by the Islanders, a James van Riemsdyk power play rebound goal (10th) knotted the score at 1-1.
In the second period, Josh Bailey (3rd) scored a go-ahead goal at 13:28 but Travis Konecny (7th) answered right back just 26 seconds later. The Flyers controlled most of the play in the middle frame but the game went to the third period tied at 2-2.
At 4:05 of the third period, Claude Giroux (13th) put the Flyers ahead, 3-2. Casey Cizikas (2nd) forced overtime.
Carter Hart stopped 28 of 31 shots in regulation and overtime. He went 8-for-9 in the skills competition. Semyon Varlamov denied 31 of 34 shots through 65 minutes. The netminder was a perfect 9-for-9 in the shootout.
The Flyers went 1-for-3 on the power play. They were 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Several hours prior to the game, the Flyers announced that center Kevin Hayes would miss 3-4 weeks after having fluid drained from his hip adductor region.
