Hello All,

The Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets in what was their first OT win of the season. Overtime has not been kind to the Capitals, so this was certainly something to celebrate! My Takeaways

Early Adversity – The Caps quickly found themselves in a 2-goal hole within the first 2:20 minutes of the game. All the thoughts were running through my mind as I am sure they were for all Caps fans. However, the Caps found a way to get the next goal and slowly and methodically battle their way back into the game. After allowing 2-goals in the first two minutes, Vanecek settled in for the rest of the game and kept the Caps in it. He made some pretty spectacular saves. While not perfect, this game further reinforces to me why Vanecek should be the main starter in net for the Caps moving forward. This was a huge come from behind win for the Caps and honestly, they needed this type of win to restore some confidence.

Alex Ovechkin – Ovechkin scored his 27th goal of the season. He is now the sole leader of goals in the NHL but has played quite a few more games than the guys behind him. Ovechkin has 27 goals in 40 GP. The guys trailing him are Draisaitl (26 goals in 35 games) and Matthews (25 goals in 36 games). Ovechkin also now leads the league in points with 55. Ovechkin now has a five game point streak and has also scored in three straight games. Here is his goal from last night:

What a pass!

Tom Wilson – Wilson scored on a beautiful feed from Kuznetsov in OT. As mentioned above, this was the Caps first OT win of the season. This was Wilson's second career OT goal. This was Wilson’s 12th goal of the season and his 28th point in his 36 GP. Like Ovechkin, Wilson is also on a three-game goal scoring streak. Wilson continues to show just how great he can be when he keeps his head on straight. Wilson played on a line with Protas and Backstrom last night. According to natural stat trick, this line at 5v5 out shot their opponent 6-1, outscored the opposition 1-0, and out attempted the opponent 12-3. Pretty solid performance by this line! As much as I love seeing Ovechkin and Wilson play together, I am also equally a fan of the Wilson-Protas combo. Here is the Tom Wilson game winner:

The Penalty Kill – The Caps PK once again looked abysmal at times. I don’t have the stats because I couldn’t find it but the amount of zone time that the Jets had on the PP was absurd. The Caps absolutely need to tighten this up or they will continue to give up PPG against.

All in all, it was a great game! I actually was supposed to go to the game but I gave my tickets to a friend. Next Up, the Caps travel to Boston to face the Bruins on Thursday night. The Caps played another great 5v5 game today. If they can limit penalties against the Bruins and we get semi-competent goaltending, we should be able to squeak out a win at the Garden.

Thanks for reading and GO CAPS!
