It wasn’t an easy night for Samuel Montembeault, for the second game in a row, he faced a myriad of shots (53 to be exact) and unlike in Dallas where he was able to pull the upset, he could only delay the inevitable until overtime. To be fair though, it was a fun game to watch, and the Canadiens managed to get 27 shots on goal, which is a lot by their standards these days. Pezzetta, Toffoli and Hoffman were the Canadiens’ scorers, and it was another solid game for Alexander Romanov who landed 4 hits and finished the night with a +2 rating.

After the extra point picked up thanks to the overtime loss, the Canadiens are still dead last in the league, 2 points behind the Coyotes who have a game in hand as well. Since the new GM was appointed though, we’ve seen some inspired performance from some players. Samuel Montembeault being on of them. At the end of the season, he’ll be an RFA with arbitration rights and I dare say he’s making a case for the Canadiens to keep him around. He’s not perfect and there’s still work to be done, but for a team in Montreal’s position he could prove to be an interesting asset.

With Jake Allen out for 8 weeks with a lower-body injury, it becomes almost impossible to move him at the deadline and if Hughes wants his Montreal Canadiens to be offense minded, well, a tandem of Allen and Montembeault next year while Primeau gets more seasoning in the AHL sounds like a good idea. Because yes, if they want to eventually turn this thing around, and focus on offense first, they need to stop spending $.10.5 M on a goaltender. I’m sorry for his legion of fans, but I do believe his time in Montreal is coming to an end. At 34 years-old and with so many injuries, time is running out on Price, and I can’t see him wanting to go through a rebuild. Of course, the Canadiens will have to eat a fair part of his huge cap hit, but I can see him waiving his no movement clause to go to a team that’s a contender or that’s not 32nd in the standings. If I was a betting woman, I’d put some money on a deal happening at the draft…With his significant cap hit, a deal in the offseason, when team can go over the cap makes sense.

I know, Price likely won’t be the only one to go, I expect a lot of movement, but I do hope the new management finds a way to keep Tyler Toffoli. In 2 games since he returned from injury, he’s got 3 points and he does have good chemistry with Nick Suzuki. Furthermore, the way he’s playing, he doesn’t look like someone who’s planning to get out of town, and he’s signed to a very reasonable contract. I also hope that Josh Anderson sticks around as well, when a guy comes out and says that he signed long-term because he wants to be in Montreal and win in Montreal, you keep hold of him. Hopefully, he finds a way to stay healthy though.

As much as I like Brendan Gallagher and what he’s done for this team, I feel that much like Price, he’s probably on his way out as well. The way he spoke to the media when the possibility of a reconstruction was put to him leads me to believe that he wants no part in that kind of process. I also believes that Jeff Petry is on borrowed time in Montreal, it’s a shame but something’s just not right this year and with his family staying back in the US, I have a feeling he'll want to join them, where (to quote his wife) “the kids can have a more normal life”.
Tomorrow, the Canadiens will take on the Avalanche in Colorado and it’s going to be a tall order, the Avs are 9-0-1 in their last 10 games and are 3rd in the league with a few games in hand on the leading Panthers and Lightning.
