The Anaheim Ducks wrapped up their five-game road trip last night with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Despite a slow first period overall, the Red Wings really started to pressure Anaheim near the end of the period. Dylan Larkin then opened the scoring with under a minute to go in the frame, driving down the wing past Kevin Shattenkirk and beating John Gibson, to give Detroit the lead after 20 minutes.
The Ducks responded early in the second period though, with Rickard Rakell taking a pass from Adam Henrique and putting a quick shot past Alex Nedeljkovic to tie the game. Anaheim didn’t generate a ton of chances after that though and the two teams remained tied through two periods.
The final frame was also a pretty slow one, with the teams combining for just 14 shots. It looked like the Red Wings had taken a lead with a late goal but after review, it was determined the puck was kicked in and as a result, the teams went to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Red Wings continued to get the better of the chances and Jordan Oesterle was the hero for Detroit, taking a pass off a faceoff to beat Gibson for a 2-1 Red Wings win.
This was another game where Anaheim was outplayed but this time, they didn’t manage to get the win. Despite the loss though, this can certainly still be called a successful road trip for the Ducks. They went 3-0-2, taking eight of a possible 10 points, despite not necessarily playing at the top of their game through a lot of their trip.
The Ducks still sit ninth in the Western Conference in points percentage but the successful road trip keeps them very much in the playoff race. Anaheim will now have a break until February 11, when they face the Seattle Kraken.
