The New York Islanders wrapped up their seven-game homestand with a shutout loss to Seattle Kraken yesterday, falling 3-0.

It was an extremely slow first period, as the teams exchanged just about no quality chances and the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes. It was certainly far from a great opening period for the Islanders though, as they managed just five shots. There wasn’t really a ton of action in the second period either and after combining for just 15 shots in the second frame, neither team could break the tie before the second intermission.

The Kraken opened the scoring in the third period though, as Jordan Eberle won a battle down low against Scott Mayfield and got the puck to Jared McCann, who beat Semyon Varlamov before the netminder could even track who had the puck. Then just 2:30 later, Vince Dunn went to the backhand to beat Varlamov with a weak backhand shot to extend Seattle’s lead to 2-0. The Islanders really didn’t mount much offense or any attempt to claw their way back and the Kraken added an empty net goal, taking a 3-0 win.

This was without a doubt one of the team’s most deflating losses of the season. They’re back below .500 after being shut out by one of the NHL’s worst teams on home ice.

Not only that, but it was just a really poor performance where New York really didn’t do much at all to create any offense. They managed just 19 shots, with very few of those resembling real scoring chances. The goals against Semyon Varlamov were weak as well but it’s hard to blame a goalie when you get shut out with under 20 shots.

With the loss, the Islanders cap off a disappointing homestand, which had served as an excellent opportunity to climb back into the playoff picture. They went just 3-4-0 over their last seven home games, despite a very average quality of competition. It’s hard to imagine New York mounting any sort of a comeback at this point, especially with nine of their next 11 games coming on the road.

New York’s next game comes against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, February 9.
