The San Jose Sharks fell to the Edmonton Oilers in their first game after the All-Star Break, losing 3-0 yesterday.
The Sharks had a great start, generating several really good chances in the first five minutes or so, but couldn’t convert. As a result, the Oilers struck first, with Evan Bouchard’s point shot deflecting off Derek Ryan, then Warren Foegele, before finding its way in. Then just a minute after that, Darnell Nurse’s point shot deflected in off Nicolas Meloche’s stick, quickly making it a two-goal Oilers lead. The Sharks really cooled off after the pair of goals and went into the intermission down 2-0, after a weaker back half of the frame.
The second period was rough. The Sharks were badly outplayed, being outshot 14-2 and spending a lot of the frame in their zone. Even though San Jose didn’t allow a goal and remained down by only two goals, it was a pretty deflating frame.
The Oilers extended their lead under two minutes into the third period, driving around Brent Burns and going five-hole on James Reimer. While the Sharks did manage some shots in a better performance than what we saw in the second period, they still didn’t get much going, as Edmonton hung on for the shutout win.
The game marked Evander Kane’s return to San Jose, following nearly four years with the organization. The forward signed with the Oilers after his contract was terminated by the Sharks earlier this season.
Kane didn’t get on the board but did manage four shots. It wasn't necessarily a warm welcome for him though.
After a strong first five minutes, this was a pretty rough game for San Jose. They were outplayed through almost the entire outing, being outshot 41-20, with only 10 of those coming in the back 40 minutes.
The Sharks are now down to a 22-21-4 record and are still down in 12th in the Western Conference. San Jose's next game comes on Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks.
