The Columbus Blue Jackets continue their roll in February with a 7-3 statement against the Sabres in their home building. It improved the Jackets record to 5-1-0 in the month, with their first home win after their previous 5 on the road. Additionally, this was was the club’s first home win since January 27, and improves them to 2 wins above the 0.500 winning record mark, with games in hand on the the next team in front of them, being the Detroit Red Wings.
Dean Kukan opened the scoring with his second of the season; Yegor Chinakov and Max Domi had the apples. The assist for Domi was his 200th in his career.
Buffalo came back with 2 goals in 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Defender Mark Pysyk, who is getting interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs, got his second of the year with the help of Victor Olofsson and Dylan Cozens. Tage Thompson, the Sabres representative for the last man in ballot, registered his 20th goal of the season; “ player to watch” Alex Tuch got the lone assist.
Boone Jenner’s tying goal would be the first of 4 unanswered Columbus goals over the next 20 minutes and 19 seconds. The captain’s deflection was his 21st of the year; Jakub Voracek and Patty Laine had the assists. Kukan’s second of the game was aided by Gavin Bayreuther and Brendan Gaunce; Zach Werenski’s 8th got assisted by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jens; and Gaunce’s second was
Kyle Okposo stopped the bleeding with his 12th of the year; Peyton Krebs and Casey Mittlestadt had the assists.
Gustav Nyquist scored on the empty net for his 13th this year; Sean Kuraly and Vladislav Gavrikov had the points. In his first game back from injury, Justin Danforth gets his 3rd career goal with 4 seconds left with Gaunce getting yet another point on the night.
Jean-Francois Berube was the star that shined through his first game back in the NHL, having a 0.917 save percentage against the retooling Sabers.
Craig Anderson stopped 32 of 38 for a 0.842 save percentage.
