The Carolina Hurricanes’ five-game win streak came to an end tonight, as they fell 4-3 in overtime against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Hurricanes took some early penalties but managed to kill them off and later, on a power play of their own, Sebastian Aho finished off a nice passing play to open the scoring for the Hurricanes. Despite being slightly outshot and outchanced, the Hurricanes took the lead into the intermission.
The Red Wings really limited Carolina’s chances through a lot of the second period and midway through the frame, Carter Rowney tipped in a puck to tie the game, as the lone goal of the period.
Detroit took the lead early in the third frame, as Michael Rasmussen took a pass from Jordan Oesterle and went in on a rush, going five-hole on Raanta. The Hurricanes tied it quickly though, as a puck popped out to Jesper Fast and his shot deflected in off Jordan Staal to tie the game. Then with only four minutes to go, Staal got on the board again, spinning with the puck in front and backhanding a shot past Nedeljkovic to put the Hurricanes back up. Under a minute later though, Brady Skjei committed a brutal turnover, and Dylan Larkin capitalized, backhanding a shot past Raanta to tie it again, sending the game to overtime.
Early in overtime, chances were exchanged but pretty soon, the Red Wings really took over. Antti Raanta was forced to make several huge stops, with Detroit putting seven shots on him in the extra frame and finally, Lucas Raymond buried a rebound with only eight seconds remaining in overtime to win it.
It wasn’t a full 60 minute effort from the Hurricanes, and their chances came more in spurts. They were outplayed through a lot of the game and just weren’t the better team.
Even though Brady Skjei is having a bounce back year offensively and has generally been quite decent defensively for the Hurricanes (especially since last year’s postseason), it’s always nerve-wracking when he’s actually handling the puck in his own end. The third goal against was a reminder as to why.
Huge credit to Antti Raanta for his performance, despite the loss. He made countless excellent saves and was a key reason in the Hurricanes getting to overtime, then almost getting to a shootout afterwards.
Despite the loss ending the winning streak, at least Carolina got a point here on the road. Their next game comes on Thursday against the Washington Capitals.
